Description
Keiko Sasahara is the younger sister of Kanji Sasahara, a main character and the president of the university club around which the story revolves. In stark contrast to her brother, Keiko is initially presented as a fashionable and trendy high school student, heavily influenced by her friends and the kogal subculture. Her appearance upon introduction is marked by heavy makeup, styled hair and nails, and faddish clothing, though she matures over time to adopt a less artificial and more individual sense of style.

Keiko's personality is characterized by impulsiveness, stubbornness, and a teasing, sometimes conniving nature. She is superficial in her early judgments, particularly regarding her brother's otaku lifestyle, which she openly antagonizes. She admits to only being interested in dating attractive men, a trait that often leads her into difficult situations. Keiko is also a competitive spirit, driven by her pride and a desire to win, whether in romance or in social situations. She has a habit of borrowing money from her brother for shopping sprees and enjoys teasing the male members of the Genshiken, especially her brother and his friend Harunobu Madarame, whom she persistently calls Watanabe for no particular reason, much to his annoyance.

Her motivations shift dramatically when she encounters Makoto Kousaka, a handsome but deeply dedicated otaku who is also her brother's club mate. Instantly enamored with him, she becomes determined to find common ground, going so far as to feign interest in his anime merchandise and attempt to watch hardcore anime series to relate to him. This crush becomes her primary motivation for becoming an unofficial member of the Genshiken, despite not being a university student. She even moves into her brother's apartment to take the university's entrance exam, and though she fails, she enrolls in a nearby business college, ostensibly to remain close to Kousaka. Later, after her initial infatuation fades, her motivations shift again, revealing a more complex interest in Madarame, whom she seems to find endearing for his hopeless and unrequited love for another character.

Within the story, Keiko serves as a foil to both the otaku members and the non-otaku Saki Kasukabe. She is a bridge between the two worlds, being a normal, trend-conscious girl who is also unreliable and willing to engage with otaku culture for her own selfish reasons. Her role grows from a disruptive outsider to a semi-regular associate member who observes and comments on the group's dynamics. In the later Nidaime storyline, she works at a hostess club under the alias Kyouko and frequently offers business cards to the male club members, trying to entice them to visit.

Key relationships define much of her development. Her relationship with her brother Kanji evolves from one of open disdain and teasing to a more tolerant, though still casually annoying, sibling bond. Her rivalry with Saki Kasukabe over Kousaka is significant; she competes directly with Saki, but this rivalry also leads to a closer, more understanding friendship between the two women as they navigate their connections to the otaku world. Her most complex relationship is with Madarame. She constantly teases him about his own unrequited feelings for Saki, but later shows a surprising degree of insight into his psychology, helping to push him toward a romantic confession. Her actions lead to speculation that she harbors her own hidden romantic interest in him, driven by a competitive spirit and finding his dedicated, hopeless love to be cute.

Keiko's development is substantial. She starts as a shallow, makeup-laden high schooler who despises her brother's hobbies. After failing to win Kousaka, she nevertheless becomes integrated into the Genshiken's social circle. By the time of Nidaime, she has toned down her appearance and holds a job, displaying a more mature, though still sharp and teasing, personality. Her understanding of the otaku world and the people in it deepens considerably, allowing her to act as an unexpected source of harsh but effective advice.

While not an otaku herself, Keiko possesses notable social abilities. She has a keen ability to read people's distorted psychology and insecurities, and she can manipulate situations with a femme fatale-like precision, particularly when it comes to men. Her work at the hostess club also gives her a worldly understanding of men and relationships that the more sheltered club members lack. She demonstrates a hidden competitive drive and the ability to be surprisingly considerate and effective when solving interpersonal problems, even if her methods are unconventional.
