Description
Hanai Haruki is the class representative of class 2-C at Yagami High School. Standing at 182 centimeters tall with black hair and eyes, he presents an initial image of a studious and disciplined honor student, complete with glasses and a serious demeanor. This appearance is not misleading, as he consistently ranks at the top of his grade and possesses the academic ambition to aim for the highly prestigious University of Tokyo. However, this outward calm masks an intensely passionate and fiercely hot-blooded personality. Haruki is defined by an overwhelming earnestness; he approaches every task with absolute sincerity, effort, and a rigid sense of moral justice, which often results in him being a spectacularly single-minded and comically overzealous individual. This combination of high intelligence, formidable skill, and extreme, unfiltered emotions makes him a quintessential example of a person who has mastered both intellect and martial arts but is completely undone by his own fervor.

Haruki's primary motivation throughout the story is his obsessive, one-sided love for Yakumo Tsukamoto, the younger sister of the main protagonist, Tenma. He fell hopelessly in love with her at first sight upon seeing her dozing on a bench, and from that moment forward, his affections often border on stalker-like devotion, driving Yakumo to hide from him due to feeling burdened by his intensity. This unrequited love is a central driving force behind many of his actions and conflicts. His role in the narrative is that of a major supporting character and a direct rival to Kenji Harima. As the responsible class president of the notoriously unruly class 2-C, he often finds himself butting heads with Harima, a reformed delinquent, over misunderstandings related to the Tsukamoto sisters. Their rivalry extends beyond academics and class leadership into near-constant physical confrontations, as both are exceptionally skilled fighters with pride to match, though their clashes frequently end in draws or are interrupted by absurd circumstances.

Several key relationships define Haruki's journey. His most significant connection is with his childhood friend, Mikoto Suou. They have trained together in martial arts since childhood at his father's Shaolin Temple dojo, forging a bond that is often described as closer than that of lovers, despite neither initially acknowledging romantic feelings. His rivalry with Kenji Harima is central, marked by numerous fights and a mutual inability to communicate, though they occasionally form an uneasy alliance against other classes. He also has a unique dynamic with the calm and collected Akira Takano, who seems to be one of the few people capable of easily disarming and humiliating him, often serving as his nemesis. Another rival is Masakazu Togo, the representative of the rival class 2-D, and the exchange student Harry MacKenzie, whose name is easily mistaken for Harima's, leading to initial conflicts.

Over the course of the series, Haruki experiences limited but notable development. While his initial trajectory is firmly set on winning Yakumo's heart, his advances are consistently thwarted, especially once it becomes clear that Yakumo's own feelings are turning toward Harima. As his one-sided pursuit runs its course, the narrative increasingly hints at the potential for a romantic relationship with his steadfast companion, Mikoto. This culmination is seen in the sequel material, where it is confirmed that Haruki and Mikoto eventually marry and have a child, providing a final, stable resolution to his emotionally turbulent school years. Beyond his academic and leadership abilities, Haruki is a national-class martial artist whose skills are on par with, and in some physical aspects surpass, the main protagonist Kenji Harima. His fighting style is a testament to his dedicated and powerful nature. In a bizarre contrast to his other talents, he possesses an astonishingly terrible ability to play the recorder, producing a sound so dreadful it is considered a weapon of mass annoyance, similar to the infamous singing of another fictional character.
