TV-Series
Description
Souseiseki is the fourth doll of the Rozen Maiden series, crafted by the skilled doll maker Rozen. She is the younger twin sister of Suiseiseki, and together they are often referred to as the twin gardeners. Souseiseki has short dark brown hair and distinctive heterochromatic eyes, with her right eye being green and her left eye red, the direct opposite of her sister's eye colors. Her appearance is notably masculine compared to her sisters; she typically wears a princely outfit consisting of a blue caplet over a white shirt, blue pants, and a silk fedora or top hat. This boyish presentation extends to her speech patterns, as she uses the masculine first-person pronoun boku.
In terms of personality, Souseiseki is rational, calm, and quiet, presenting a stark contrast to her more mischievous and emotional twin. She possesses a sharpness in her speech that is similar to that of Shinku, and she is serious and practical in her actions. Souseiseki does not tolerate sub-par actions and can be ruthless in combat. She is deeply devoted to her master and feels a strong sense of duty, not only to the person she contracts with but also to her creator, Rozen. This sense of duty makes her more willing to participate in the Alice Game, the deadly contest among the Rozen Maidens to collect each other's magical essence, Rosa Mystica, in order to become the perfect girl, Alice. She often serves as the voice of reason when her sister causes trouble, but she is also frequently pulled into the chaos that Suiseiseki creates.
Souseiseki shows great care for her sisters, and despite her serious exterior, she is kind-hearted. She is not driven by a desire for power for its own sake, but rather out of a sense of obligation to fulfill what she believes is her father Rozen's wish. Her motivations are frequently tied to her duty to her current master and her interpretation of the Alice Game as an inevitable fate. This often puts her at odds with Suiseiseki, who values their bond as sisters above the goal of becoming Alice.
Throughout the various manga and anime adaptations, Souseiseki has served several masters, including Kazuha Yuibishi, an old man named Motoharu Shibasaki, and Jun Sakurada, the series' primary protagonist. Her role in the story is often that of a catalyst for conflict, as she is frequently the first among the sisters to be retired from the Alice Game, losing her Rosa Mystica. In the original manga, her master seeks revenge, and Souseiseki eventually realizes it is his own heart that needs healing, leading her to sacrifice herself. In the 2004 anime adaptation, she is devoted to a lonely watchmaker who treats her as a substitute for his deceased son. Feeling a conflict between her happy life and her duty to Rozen, she ultimately chooses to participate in the Alice Game, leading to a battle with Suigintou where she is defeated and her Rosa Mystica is taken.
The relationship with her twin, Suiseiseki, is the most significant in her life. They are rarely seen apart, and despite their opposite personalities, they share an unbreakable bond. Their abilities as gardeners are complementary and are most effective when used together. For instance, in Zurückspulen, the 2013 anime and manga continuation, Kirakisho attempts to take over Souseiseki's body, prompting Suiseiseki to sacrifice her own Rosa Mystica to save her twin. This act underscores the deep love and connection between them, showing that their bond transcends the rules of the Alice Game. In the end, after being revived by Shinku who has become Alice, Souseiseki, along with her sister and the other revived dolls, accompanies Jun Sakurada on a journey to find a new Rosa Mystica to revive Shinku, having gained a deeper appreciation for kinship over rivalry.
Souseiseki's most notable ability is her power to enter human dreams. As a gardener of the soul, she wields a pair of large golden gardener's shears. Within a person's dream, she can use these shears to prune the soul tree, cutting away the brambles and weeds that represent emotional burdens and harmful memories. However, this power is a double-edged sword; it can also be used to maliciously cut away good memories or directly attack the soul tree of another Rozen Maiden. In combat in the real world, she wields her shears like a sword for close-range fighting, often combining her attacks with acrobatic flight. She can also throw her hat like a boomerang as a projectile weapon. Her artificial spirit, which helps her summon her weapon and perform her abilities, is a light blue entity named Lempicka. While Suiseiseki uses a watering can to help a soul tree grow, Souseiseki's shears are required to prune it, making their powers incomplete without each other. It has been suggested that the twins originally shared a single Rosa Mystica that was split in two, which explains why they must work together to fully utilize their gardening abilities.
