Description
Brandon Heat, also known as Beyond the Grave, is the central protagonist of the Gungrave story. He exists in two distinct forms: as a living man who rises through the ranks of a powerful mafia syndicate, and later as a silent, supernaturally reanimated corpse seeking to resolve the conflicts of his former life.

Before his death, Brandon Heat was a man of few words who possessed a deep and unwavering sense of loyalty. Having grown up in the harsh environment of the streets, he developed a calm and reserved exterior, but this masked a profoundly kind and selfless heart. His actions consistently spoke louder than his sparse words; he was not motivated by personal ambition or greed but by a deep-seated need to protect those he cared about. This protective instinct was so strong that he was willing to sacrifice his own happiness, most notably by giving up Maria, the woman he loved, to the syndicate's leader, Big Daddy, believing this would ensure her safety and a better life. His loyalty was primarily directed at individuals rather than institutions, remaining devoted to his best friend Harry McDowell, his love Maria, and his mentor and father figure, Big Daddy. This personal code of honor was the guiding principle of his life.

Brandon's journey begins on the lowest rungs of Millennion, the syndicate he and Harry join in their youth. While Harry was driven by a hunger for power and status, Brandon joined for more grounded reasons: to earn enough money to buy proper graves for three friends who were killed, and to stay close to Maria, who was now under Big Daddy's protection. Despite his quiet nature, Brandon's innate talent for violence and his unflinching resolve quickly made him an exceptional operative. He became a "sweeper," Millennion's most elite and deadly assassin, feared by enemies and respected by allies. He formed his own hit squad, True Grave, and took on a protégé named Bunji Kugashira, who became his loyal right-hand man. However, his work as an assassin created a growing distance between himself and Maria, as he felt his hands had become too stained with blood to be worthy of her. The defining relationship of his life, and the catalyst for his death, was his friendship with Harry McDowell. Their bond, forged in a harsh orphanage, was unbreakable for Brandon. Even when he discovered Harry's treacherous plan to kill Big Daddy and take over Millennion, Brandon could not bring himself to kill his friend. He refused the offer to join the coup, but when he dropped his gun, Harry seized the opportunity and fatally shot him, destroying his left eye before sending his body crashing from a high-rise window.

This brutal betrayal was not the end for Brandon Heat. Prior to his death, having foreseen the possibility of Harry's treachery, he had made a request of a rogue scientist named Dr. Tokioka. He asked to be subjected to necrolization, a forbidden process that reanimates a corpse as an incredibly powerful, undead being. He is awakened fifteen years later as Beyond the Grave, a hulking, silent figure clad in a black suit and wearing a large metal coffin on his back, which serves as a mobile arsenal. As Grave, his motivations evolve from simple vengeance to a more complex sense of protection. While he does seek to destroy the corrupt Millennion that Harry now rules, his primary objective becomes protecting Mika, the teenage daughter of Maria and Big Daddy. Through his silent guardianship of Mika, a trace of Brandon Heat's gentle nature resurfaces, fulfilling his final promise to watch over the family he left behind. In his final confrontation with Harry, the tragedy of their friendship reaches its conclusion, as the two former best friends, now mortal enemies, finally make amends and end each other's suffering.

The development of Brandon Heat is one of the story's most compelling elements. He transforms from a streetwise but idealistic young man into a cold, professional killer, and finally into a tragic, revenant anti-hero. This arc is not about gaining power, but about the erosion and redefinition of his humanity. His personality carries over into his existence as Grave, but in an exaggerated form. He is even more silent, his movements are purely functional, and his loyalty is now a singular, focused drive to protect Mika and confront his past. His relationship with Mika becomes his last tether to his human heart, allowing him to express the kindness he could never fully show Maria.

As an undead necrolyzed soldier, Beyond the Grave possesses a suite of superhuman abilities. His physical strength is monstrous, allowing him to tear through steel doors, shatter concrete, and wield his enormous twin pistols, the Cerberus, with ease. He is almost entirely immune to conventional firearms and high-caliber weaponry, his body capable of withstanding immense punishment that would destroy a normal human. His stamina is seemingly limitless, allowing him to fight continuously without rest. Despite his hulking frame, Grave is an incredibly agile and skilled fighter, proficient in brutal hand-to-hand combat. However, his most legendary skill is his marksmanship. He is capable of impossibly accurate and acrobatic gunplay, often spinning and firing his pistols in a signature style, crossing his wrists and holding his guns sideways, a habit he retained from his human days. He carries a coffin-shaped container on his back that holds not only his primary weapons but can also deploy a variety of heavy artillery, from rocket launchers to giant buzzsaws, making him a one-man army.
