Description
Dr. Tokioka, later known as Dr. T, is the scientist responsible for the necrolyzation process and the resurrection of Brandon Heat as the deadman called Beyond the Grave. His background is rooted in the research laboratories owned by the Millennion crime syndicate. Early in his career, his laboratory was attacked by a rival organization called Lightning, led by Mad Dog Ladd, who killed Dr. Tokioka's colleagues and took him hostage along with his research files. After this event, he was forced to continue his work, grimly demonstrating the results of necrolization to the leaders of Lightning. Following the downfall of Lightning, Dr. Tokioka was brought under Millennion's control, where he was coerced by Harry McDowell to continue his experiments on the process of reanimating the dead.
A pensive and guilt-ridden individual, Dr. Tokioka is driven by a deep sense of remorse over his pivotal role in creating necrolization technology. He does not possess the typical demeanor of a mad scientist; rather, he is a reluctant participant who sees his life's work as an unforgivable sin. His primary motivation shifts from scientific discovery to atonement. He seeks to rectify the catastrophic consequences of his research by using the very technology he despises to fight against the tyranny it has enabled. This internal conflict leads him to reject his own surname out of shame, insisting on being called Dr. T, as he feels unworthy of his family name due to the horrors he has helped unleash.
Within the story, Dr. T plays the crucial role of the architect of revenge and the protector of innocence. He is the sole ally and caretaker of Grave, operating out of a specialized armored truck that serves as a mobile base. This vehicle contains the life-support systems necessary to sustain Grave's decaying deadman body, requiring periodic blood replacements. Years after Brandon Heat's murder, Dr. T fulfills Brandon's own request by resurrecting him to protect Mika Asagi, the daughter of Brandon's lost love, Maria. He becomes Mika's guardian and the tactical support for Grave, providing him with weapons, information, and maintenance. His most significant technical contribution is the development of anti-Superior bullets, specialized ammunition capable of defeating the enhanced undead soldiers that stand in Grave's way.
His key relationships are defined by service and guilt. He is the creator and caretaker of Beyond the Grave, a relationship built on mutual dependence and unspoken understanding, though he always refers to his creation as Grave, maintaining a distance from the man's former identity. He shares a protective bond with Mika Asagi, for whom he ultimately sacrifices himself. He also has a connection to Big Daddy, the former head of Millennion; after delivering a letter from the deceased Brandon, the grieving Big Daddy punched Dr. T in a moment of raw emotion, an act the doctor accepted without resistance.
Throughout his development, Dr. T transforms from a coerced scientist into an active agent of rebellion. Initially a passive participant forced to work for various criminal organizations, he eventually escapes with his secret weapon: the reanimated Brandon Heat. He patiently awaits the right moment for thirteen years before activating Grave to dismantle Harry McDowell's empire. His arc culminates in a final act of heroism. After shielding Mika from an attack by the Superior Balladbird Lee, Dr. T sustains a mortal wound. Knowing he is dying, he uses his last moments to reload Grave's gun with the anti-Superior bullets and transfers his own blood into storage containers, granting Grave enough energy to continue fighting for ten more days before succumbing to his injuries.
Dr. Tokioka's notable abilities are entirely scientific rather than physical. As a genius-level researcher, he mastered the complex process of necrolization, which allows him to reanimate corpses into powerful, obedient deadmen known as Orgmen. He is also a skilled bio-engineer capable of maintaining a deadman's unstable physiology through regular blood transfusions and life-support machinery. His most impressive feat is the creation of the anti-Superior rounds, advanced ammunition specifically designed to counteract the regenerative abilities of the necrolized creatures. While he is not a fighter, his technical genius is the cornerstone of Grave's war against Millennion.
