TV-Series
Description
Kafk Sunbeam is a primary supporting character who appears midway through the Stone Tablet Arc as the human partner of the horse-like mamodo, Ponygon. A German man in his early thirties, Kafk has a calm and steady demeanor that distinguishes him among the more eccentric members of the main group. He stands around five feet nine inches tall and is most often depicted with bright blond hair styled in an undercut, though his appearance shifts during the Clear Note Arc when his hair grows out to a medium length. His typical outfit consists of a white collared shirt, a vest, pleated pants, and dress shoes, and he wears a gold pilot's badge on the left side of his chest.

Kafk is best described as a well-grounded, easy-going, and mature individual who remains level-headed in the face of challenging situations. He operates by a personal philosophy of being a cool adult, which means that abandoning his mamodo partner or his friends would go against his core principles. This code of honor quickly earns him the trust and camaraderie of others. He frequently uses slang terms such as groovy, dude, and rock n roll in his speech. Despite his relaxed nature, Kafk possesses a sharp intellect and a keen strategic mind. During battles, he has demonstrated the ability to read crucial information from an opponent simply by looking into their eyes and can maintain composure even when captured or immobilized, often using silent signals to guide his panicked allies. Professor Riddles describes Kafk as someone capable of seeing the truth and depths of a person's heart, a quality akin to a spiritual awakening.

Prior to entering the mamodo battle, Kafk worked as an automobile engineer in Germany before traveling to Japan for his career. He was brought into the conflict by Dr. Riddles, who revealed the existence of the mamodo battle and Kafk’s connection to Ponygon. Upon learning of the situation, Kafk felt a profound sense of duty to assist the struggling mamodo. His primary motivation throughout the series is to uphold his principles, support his friends, and help Ponygon grow stronger. He holds a strong philosophy of doing the right thing regardless of personal circumstances, such as maintaining a full-time job back home, he refuses to abandon Ponygon after witnessing the mamodo's commitment to helping others, as doing so would mean abandoning his own values.

Kafk shares a unique and exceptionally strong bond with his mamodo partner, Ponygon. Because Ponygon cannot speak any conventional language and only vocalizes sheep-like bleats, their relationship is built on emotional understanding rather than verbal communication. Kafk demonstrates an unconditional and unwavering faith in Ponygon, and this trust allows them to overcome difficult battles and grow together. He understands Ponygon's fears, his desire to not feel useless, and his courage, reciprocating the mamodo's loyalty with his own steadfast support. Kafk is also a trusted ally to the series' protagonist, Kiyo Takamine, and his partner Zatch. Despite Ponygon’s initial hostility toward Kiyo for misnaming him, Kafk works alongside Kiyo as an equal, sharing strategic insights and reinforcing the importance of calm thinking in dire moments. Later in the series, during the Faudo arc, Kafk develops a romantic interest in Elle Chivas, and after the battle concludes, it is revealed that he is living with her in Africa, where they care for animals and he continues his successful work for an automobile company.

As a character, Kafk experiences significant development from a professional engineer introduced to a supernatural conflict into a decisive and courageous fighter. When he first partners with Ponygon, he is a composed technician, but as the battles escalate, he demonstrates an increasing willingness to endure physical pain and push his own limits for the sake of his friends. His most profound moment of development occurs during the fight against the overwhelming enemy Clear Note. Seeing Ponygon's body breaking down from the intense combat, Kafk makes the heartbreaking decision to burn Ponygon’s spell book himself. This act, done not out of defeat but to prevent his partner from being destroyed, sends Ponygon back to the mamodo world and results in them placing fourth in the battle to become king. This choice reflects his ultimate commitment to his philosophy of being a cool adult protecting those he cares about.

Kafk is able to read the spells in Ponygon’s book, which grant the mamodo various armor-based transformations. These spells enhance Ponygon’s speed, power, and defensive capabilities, and also grant him an affinity for fire-based attacks and the ability to fly. Kafk’s tactical thinking allows him to utilize these spells effectively in combat. While he does not possess any personal combat abilities, his sharp observational skills and unshakable calm are his greatest assets, enabling him to find weaknesses in opponents and guide his partner to victory even when the enemy appears far more powerful.
