Description
Mizuno Suzume, commonly referred to as Suzy, is a recurring supporting character in the manga and anime series Zatch Bell. She is a fourteen-year-old Japanese schoolgirl and a classmate of the main protagonist, Kiyo Takamine. Suzy is portrayed as a well-meaning and emotionally sincere girl whose most defining trait is her loyalty, especially toward Kiyo. She has a straightforward and unguarded affection for him, which often manifests as a schoolgirl crush. Before the arrival of Zatch, Suzy persistently reached out to Kiyo despite his rude and dismissive attitude, believing that his intelligence isolated him from others and that he needed a friend. This motivation stems from her inherently kind and pure-hearted nature rather than any calculated intent.

Suzy is depicted as a ditzy and klutzy individual, often oblivious to events happening around her. She has a habit of drawing faces on fruit, particularly oranges, as a way to express her feelings, and she once brought Kiyo a basket of such fruit when he was hospitalized. She seldom misses school and can become upset or cry if someone, especially Kiyo, breaks a promise or insults her. She is also prone to jealousy when she sees Kiyo with other girls, such as the pop idol Megumi. Despite her scatterbrained tendencies, Suzy remains a steadfast friend to both Kiyo and Zatch, and she quickly becomes one of Zatch’s first human companions after Kiyo.

Her role in the story is that of a comic relief and a grounding human presence who represents the ordinary world outside the Mamodo battles. While she is not directly involved in the supernatural conflict, she occasionally stumbles into the main plot by accident. For instance, after winning a trip to Hong Kong, she mistakenly ends up in London, where Kiyo and Zatch are searching for Kiyo’s father, and she remains unaware that she is in the wrong city. These misadventures highlight her cheerful obliviousness.

Key relationships anchor her character. Her bond with Kiyo is central: she admires him and consistently tries to befriend him, even when he is curt with her. Her relationship with Zatch is warm and affectionate; Zatch sees her as a kind friend. Throughout the series, Suzy does not undergo major dramatic development, but her unwavering friendliness and emotional openness serve as a contrast to Kiyo’s initial coldness, subtly influencing him to become more sociable. She lacks any supernatural abilities and does not participate in combat, instead representing the everyday, non-magical side of the world. Her quirks, such as drawing on fruit and her enthusiastic but clumsy nature, make her a memorable presence.
