Description
Kolulu is a young gentile Mamodo who enters the tournament unwillingly, serving as one of the earliest and most important influences on the protagonist Zatch Bell. She originally arrived on Earth lost and alone, wandering the streets before being taken in by her book owner and partner, Lori, who offered her a home and treated her like a younger sister. This loving bond was the foundation of the short time Kolulu spent on Earth.
In her normal state, Kolulu is kind, gentle, and peaceful, with no desire to fight in the tournament. Despite this, the tournament imposed a violent alternate personality on her that emerges when her spells are cast. This alternate form is aggressive, powerful, and focused on battle, overriding her natural docility and granting her sharp steel claws and immense physical strength. Kolulu struggles with the fear of this transformation and the destruction it causes.
Kolulu’s primary motivation is the protection of those she cares about and a wish to escape the violence she is forced into against her will. Upon realizing that her book owner would be compelled to use her spells, transforming her into a dangerous monster, Kolulu makes the decision to eliminate herself from the tournament. She asks Zatch and Kiyo to burn her book, believing this is the only way to prevent further harm. Her final wish is for a kind king to be crowned, one who would end the forced battles between Mamodo and allow them to live peacefully. This request becomes the core of Zatch’s purpose in the tournament.
Kolulu’s role in the story is primarily that of a moral catalyst. Her sacrifice and her words directly inspire Zatch’s resolve to become a kind king. She represents the innocent victims of the tournament system. Her team is one of the first encountered by Zatch and Kiyo, and the event of her elimination has a lasting impact on the series, steering Zatch’s development.
The key relationships Kolulu forms are with her partner, Lori, whom she sees as a beloved older sister, and with Zatch, who becomes the recipient of her final, crucial plea. The bond between Kolulu and Lori is deeply familial, and the rules of the tournament force them apart against their wishes. Her brief friendship with Zatch is defined by the profound promise she extracts from him.
Kolulu’s character undergoes significant development from a lost and lonely child to a determined and self-sacrificing figure. Finding happiness with Lori is followed by the painful realization of her dual nature. Her growth culminates in her voluntary departure, an act of pure selflessness. She later returns in spirit form during the final battle against Clear Note, providing Zatch and Kiyo with a protective spell called Shin Raifojio, a healing and shielding ability that safeguards their life force. This return marks her transformation from a reluctant participant into a guardian figure.
Her abilities are centered on a transformation spell that enhances her body, granting her steel claws, increased speed, and formidable offensive power through spells while also possessing a protective barrier ability. Her most notable spell, Shin Raifojio, is a powerful defensive and restorative spell that aligns with her naturally gentle and protective nature.
