Description
Gash Bell, known in the original Japanese version as Gash Bell, is a young Mamodo, a supernatural being from another world who appears as a human child. He is approximately six years old and has a small stature, with short, lightning-blonde hair that conceals two tiny horns. His large, light orange eyes are marked with distinctive thin black lines beneath them. Gash typically wears a white shirt and shorts covered by a blue and black cloak fastened with a white bow and a yellow jewel at its center.

Before the events of the story, Gash was found wounded and unconscious in a forest in England by Professor Seitaro Takamine. He had lost all memories of his past life in the Mamodo world, including his identity as a participant in the battle to decide the next Mamodo king. As thanks for saving his life, Gash agreed to travel to Japan and befriend the professor's reclusive son, Kiyomaro, in the hope that they could help each other.

Gash possesses an exceptionally pure heart and an almost limitless capacity for kindness and willpower. He is an overly cheerful and energetic boy with a strong sense of justice, but he is also naive and clueless about the human world, which often leads to trouble. He displays stereotypical childlike behaviors, such as having an enormous appetite, with his favorite food being whole yellowtail tuna, and possessing a great fondness for the toy robot Vulcan 300 that Kiyo made for him. Despite his typically happy demeanor, Gash becomes fiercely protective of those he cares about and will not forgive anyone who hurts them. He is also capable of being serious and determined, especially when faced with cruelty. He has strong phobias related to his traumatic past, particularly a deep fear of his twin brother, Zeno.

Gash's primary motivation is to become a "kind king." After a battle with a gentle Mamodo girl named Kolulu, who was forced to fight against her will, Gash promised her he would win the tournament and become a ruler who would end the suffering and pointless battles in the Mamodo world. This goal becomes the driving force behind his actions and helps him earn the trust and loyalty of many other Mamodo he befriends.

His most significant relationship is with his human bookkeeper, Kiyomaro Takamine. Gash's arrival forces the withdrawn genius Kiyo to open up, and their bond of friendship and trust becomes their greatest strength in battle. Gash forms other deep alliances throughout the story, befriending fellow Mamodo such as the timid Kanchome, the defensive Tia who holds a hidden affection for him, the horse-like Ponygon, and powerful rivals who become allies like the gravity-manipulating Brago. A central conflict is his relationship with his older twin brother, Zeno, who attacked Gash on Earth and erased his memories. Their intense rivalry eventually reveals Gash's hidden past as the inheritor of a powerful, sentient lightning dragon named Bao, a power that Zeno was denied.

Gash undergoes tremendous growth over the course of the series. Initially looked down upon as a "weak crybaby" who lost consciousness every time he used a spell, he develops into a formidable and respected warrior. This weakness of losing consciousness forced Kiyo to physically aim his spells for him, a habit Gash maintained even after he grew strong enough to no longer need the aid. Over time, he gains physical strength and control over his abilities, eventually maturing to the point where his face and demeanor resemble his brother Zeno's. Ultimately, he achieves his goal by defeating Brago in the final battle, becoming the Mamodo King and ushering in a new era of peace for his world.

Gash's notable abilities are all lightning-based and are activated when Kiyo reads spells from the red book. His initial and most basic spell is Zaker, which fires a powerful lightning bolt from his mouth. As he grows, he learns more advanced spells, including the defensive shield Rashield, the magnetizing Jikerdor, and the physical-enhancing Rauzaruk. His signature ultimate spell is Bao Zakeruga, which manifests a colossal dragon made of lightning that can devour negative emotions. Other powerful spells he eventually masters include the focused lance Ekuseresu Zakeruga and the final, most destructive form, Shin Beruwan Bao Zakeruga, a hydra-like embodiment of lightning. The unique trait of Gash losing consciousness upon spell casting is a distinct characteristic that sets him apart from all other Mamodo in the tournament.
