Description
Kiyomaro Takamine, often called Kiyo, is a 14-year-old junior high school student who serves as the primary human protagonist and the book keeper for the mamodo Zatch Bell. He possesses an IQ of over 180, a genius-level intellect that initially isolates him from his peers. His intelligence leads to teasing and harassment from classmates, which causes him to develop an introverted, apathetic, and reclusive demeanor, leading him to skip school regularly. Before Zatch enters his life, Kiyo has no friends and is viewed by others as arrogant and unapproachable. Despite this cold exterior, he is not cruel-hearted; he is deeply disgusted by those who manipulate or harm others for enjoyment.
Kiyo’s entire lifestyle and personality undergo a dramatic transformation after the young mamodo Zatch Bell is sent by Kiyo’s father to live with him. Through Zatch’s overly cheerful, innocent, and persistent influence, Kiyo gradually becomes more outgoing and compassionate. His social circle expands, and he eventually becomes popular in his class, even tutoring fellow students. Nevertheless, he retains a notoriously bad temper and is easily irritated, often yelling at Zatch or his well-meaning but ditzy classmate, Suzy Mizuno. He is extremely protective of his friends and Zatch’s red spell book, and he is willing to endure severe physical injury or even death to prevent it from being burned.
Kiyo’s central motivation stems from an early encounter with a gentle mamodo named Kolulu, who was forced to fight against her will. Witnessing her suffering inspires Zatch to strive to become a kind king who will end the cruel mamodo battles, and Kiyo fully dedicates himself to supporting this noble goal. His primary role in the story is that of a tactician and strategist. His high intelligence allows Zatch, who is often physically weaker than his opponents, to defeat much more powerful mamodos through clever planning, environmental manipulation, and quick decision-making.
Key relationships define his journey. His bond with Zatch Bell is the most critical, as it serves as the catalyst for his emotional growth and the center of the story’s action. He shares a significant friendship with Suzy Mizuno, who was kind to him even before Zatch arrived, though he frequently finds her antics exasperating. Throughout the series, he forges strong alliances with other mamodo-human pairs, including the superstar Parco Folgore and his mamodo Kanchomé, the idol singer Megumi Oumi and her mamodo Tia, and the magician Dr. Riddles and his mamodo Kido.
Kiyo experiences significant development, most notably gaining a powerful ability called Answer Talker after being killed in battle and subsequently brought back to life. This ability allows him to know the answer to any question he poses, which he uses in combat to perfectly understand an opponent’s attacks, evade them, and formulate the most effective countermeasure. His physical capabilities also increase dramatically through the rigors of battle, to the point where he can break school athletic records by the end of the series.
His notable abilities are almost entirely mental and strategic rather than physical. While Zatch provides the raw magical power in the form of lightning spells like Zaker and the mighty Bao Zakeruga, Kiyo provides the intellect to deploy them effectively. He devised a method for Zatch to maintain consciousness during spell-casting by training him to look in the direction Kiyo points. The Answer Talker ability represents the peak of his power, transforming him from a mere genius into someone with near-omniscient tactical insight.
