Description
Gash Bell, also known in the original Japanese version as Zatch Bell, is the main protagonist of the series. He is a young Mamodo, a supernatural being from another world called the Mamodo World, who stands at only six years old. Gash has a small stature with short, lightning-blonde hair that hides two tiny horns, and large, light orange eyes with distinctive thin black lines beneath them. He is typically seen wearing a simple white t-shirt and shorts under a blue and black cloak secured with a white bow and a yellow jewel.

Gash's background is marked by hardship and mystery. He is the son of the Mamodo King and the younger twin brother of Zeno. Because he inherited a powerful and dangerous sentient spell named Bao, his father sent him away to be raised in secret to prevent him from being corrupted by the power. Growing up in the Mamodo World, Gash was often looked down upon and ridiculed by other Mamodo children, who called him a weak crybaby because he would lose consciousness whenever he attempted to use his spells. He was sent to Earth to participate in the thousand-year tournament to decide the next ruler of the Mamodo World. However, shortly after his arrival, he was attacked by his brother Zeno, who erased all his memories of his life in the Mamodo world. Gash was then found wounded and unconscious in a forest in England by a professor named Seitaro Takamine, who sent him to live with his son, Kiyo.

In terms of personality, Gash is overwhelmingly cheerful, optimistic, and kind-hearted, possessing a strong and unwavering sense of justice. He displays stereotypical child-like tendencies, including a bottomless appetite, with his absolute favorite food being yellowtail tuna, which he prefers to eat whole. He is also clueless about the human world and often needs supervision from Kiyo to avoid getting into trouble. Despite his happy-go-lucky nature, Gash is fiercely protective of those he cares about. He cannot forgive those who hurt his loved ones and becomes a formidable and serious opponent when pushed to his limits. His defining motivation is forged from an early encounter with a gentle Mamodo girl named Kolulu, who was forced to fight against her will. After her book was burned, Gash made a solemn vow to become a kind and merciful king who would end the cruel fighting and bring peace to the Mamodo World. This oath drives him throughout the entire tournament.

His role in the story begins as a lost amnesiac but quickly evolves into that of a central unifying figure in the battle for king. Kiyo initially sees him as a nuisance, but Gash's pure nature helps the reclusive genius open up to others and make friends. As they progress, Gash and Kiyo form alliances with many other Mamodo and their human partners, including Tia, Kanchomé, and the horse-like Ponygon. These relationships are key to Gash's character, as he easily accepts others as friends and inspires fierce loyalty in them. His most significant relationship is with his twin brother Zeno, who serves as a major antagonist. Gash initially fears Zeno, but upon learning their shared history and Zeno's resentment, he resolves to stop him. In their final battle, Gash defeats his brother, and Zeno, regretting his actions, transfers the remainder of his power to Gash.

Throughout the series, Gash undergoes significant development. He starts as a weak and naive child who cannot control his own powers but grows into a strong and confident fighter and leader. His unique weakness is that he loses consciousness whenever a spell is cast, forcing Kiyo to develop a method of aiming him by pointing. As Gash matures emotionally and strengthens his bond with Kiyo, he gains access to new and more powerful spells. By the end of the tournament, he has mastered his abilities and learns to control the immense power of Bao Zakeruga to defeat the ultimate threats, including the genocidal Mamodo Clear Note and his powerful rival Brago, ultimately earning the title of Mamodo King.

Notable abilities include his affinity for lightning-based magic as contained in his red spellbook. His initial and most basic spell is Zaker, which fires a bolt of lightning from his mouth. Other key spells include Rashield, a defensive shield that reflects attacks; Rauzaruk, which enhances his physical strength; and the ultimate spell, Bao Zakeruga, which summons a colossal electrical dragon. Later in the series, he learns even more powerful variations, such as the serpentine Jiou Renzu Zakeruga and the multi-headed hydra-like Shin Beruwan Bao Zakeruga. Gash's most unique trait is the temporary unconsciousness he suffers when using his spells, but as he grows stronger, he is eventually able to overcome this limitation, keeping his consciousness intact while unleashing his full power.
