Description
Höllenmeister Febrizo, also known as Hellmaster Fibrizo, appears as the primary antagonist in the Slayers NEXT narrative. He is one of the five Mazoku Lords serving under the dark deity Ruby Eye Shabranigdu and holds the distinction of being the most powerful among them. His title, Hellmaster, signifies his dominion over the underworld, granting him absolute authority over the concepts of life, death, and the spirits of the deceased.
Febrizo’s appearance is purposefully deceptive. He manifests as a small, androgynous boy appearing roughly ten to twelve years old, with blue hair and green eyes. This childlike form is a deliberate calculation rather than a true reflection of his nature. He is deeply aware of the psychological advantage it provides, as humans consistently underestimate him based on his innocent exterior, allowing him to manipulate them with ease. In truth, his personality is the antithesis of innocence; he is depicted as calculating, sinister, sadistic, and psychotic in his fascination with pain and destruction. His motivations stem directly from the fundamental Mazoku desire for absolute nothingness. For Febrizo, the ultimate justice is the complete annihilation of existence, returning all of reality to a state of perfect, unordered chaos.
Within the hierarchy of evil, Febrizo occupies a unique position. The other Mazoku Lords are typically served by a Priest and a General, but Febrizo’s own Priest and General were destroyed long ago during the great Kōma War. To compensate for this loss and execute his intricate schemes, he borrows the services of the enigmatic Xelloss from the Greater Beast Zelas Metallium, making Xelloss a temporary subordinate. He also shares a notable rivalry with another Lord, Chaos Dragon Garv, whom he ultimately destroys with little effort to eliminate an obstacle to his plans.
Febrizo’s role in the story is that of a master schemer who prefers to manipulate events over millennia rather than engage in direct conflict. Centuries ago, he ignited the Kōma War by manipulating humans, using the immense negative energy generated by the conflict to awaken a fragment of his master, Shabranigdu, within the body of the great sage Lei Magnus. After that plan ultimately failed, he formulated a new, more audacious strategy. He sought to harness the power of the Lord of Nightmares, a chaotic entity of even higher order than his own master. Unable to call upon this power himself, he spent a thousand years searching for a human who could: the sorceress Lina Inverse. Throughout Slayers NEXT, he orchestrates events from the shadows, finally revealing himself and capturing Lina’s friends, including Gourry Gabriev, to use them as hostages. He forces Lina to cast the forbidden Giga Slave spell, threatening to kill her companions one by one with small golden spheres, each of which is linked to a victim’s life force. When the spell is cast, Febrizo attempts to destroy Lina’s body so the uncontrolled power of the Lord of Nightmares will consume the world, believing this chaotic entity to be a natural ally in his quest for destruction.
The conclusion of his plan brings about his development and eventual demise. When the Lord of Nightmares manifests directly through Lina’s body instead of simply releasing its power, Febrizo is confronted with his greatest miscalculation. He cannot comprehend why the Golden Lord does not immediately annihilate everything. In a desperate, ill-fated act of defiance, he attacks the Lord of Nightmares directly, refusing to accept that his perfect plan has failed at its most fundamental level. This action leads to his swift and absolute destruction, a final irony for a being who craved the void.
In terms of notable abilities, Febrizo is ranked as perhaps the most powerful entity on the mortal plane, second only to the gods Shabranigdu and Flare Dragon Ceifeed. His power is primarily focused on the Astral Side, allowing him to phase between the spiritual and material realms with ease. His signature method of execution involves creating small golden spheres, which he can crush with a simple finger snap. This action instantly shatters the spiritual life force of the corresponding victim, causing them to suffer immense pain and collapse. Beyond this, his raw magical strength is immense; he can defeat fellow Mazoku Lords with a casual gesture and, in the light novel continuity, successfully defend against an incomplete version of the devastating Giga Slave spell. His ability to trap countless humans, including powerful mages, inside gigantic crystal prisons to augment his own power further demonstrates his terrifying mastery over souls and matter.
