TV-Series
Description
Martina Zoana Mel Navratilova is a character who appears exclusively in the television series Slayers NEXT and does not originate from the light novels or manga. She is introduced as the princess of the kingdom of Zoana. Together with her father, the king, she plots to capture Amelia, the princess of Saillune, as part of a plan to conquer the neighboring kingdom. When Lina Inverse and her companions intervene, Lina uses the Dragon Slave spell, which destroys Martina’s castle and the entire kingdom of Zoana. Enraged and humiliated, Martina flees and dedicates herself to learning magic so she can take revenge on Lina.
Martina’s personality is marked by intense exuberance and a tendency toward extreme obsession. She is cheerful and vivacious but can become fixated on any idea or plan that crosses her mind. She has a habit of speaking to herself while pretending to converse with a creature she calls Lord Zoamelgustar, a demon god that she entirely invented. She carries a talisman representing this invented deity and treats it with great reverence. Martina is also famously fickle in romantic matters, becoming infatuated with whichever man catches her attention at a given moment. Over the course of the series, her affections shift rapidly from Zelgadis to Gourry, then to Xellos, and finally settle on Zangulus, a mercenary she eventually marries in a staged wedding ceremony set against a painted backdrop.
Her primary motivation throughout much of the story is revenge against Lina Inverse for the destruction of her home and kingdom. She attempts to hinder Lina and her group at every opportunity, often using curses and sabotage. However, her schemes are usually clumsy and ineffective, making her more of a comic foil than a serious threat. Despite her vengeful intentions, Martina gradually becomes entangled with the group and even aids them on occasion. Her role shifts from that of a petty antagonist to an occasional ally and source of comic relief. During the final battle against Hellmaster Phibrizo, Martina appears to be killed, but in her last moments she encourages Lina to keep fighting and to save Gourry, demonstrating a genuine change of heart. After the conflict, she marries Zangulus and becomes the new queen of the rebuilding Zoana.
In terms of abilities, Martina is not a powerful sorceress. She has no formal training in magic and relies on her own obsessive determination to channel her will into curses. These curses are usually not very strong but can be annoying and unpredictable, often causing minor troubles for her targets. She is also surprisingly resourceful in manual trades, frequently making and selling handmade goods such as paper flowers or Zoamelgustar amulets to support herself. She has no notable prowess with weapons, but she does carry a cursed dagger and other small blades. Overall, Martina’s magic is below average, but her persistence and occasional cunning allow her to create small-scale difficulties for the main characters.
Martina’s relationships are central to her character. She has a close but domineering relationship with her father, the king, often influencing his decisions. She develops a rivalry with Amelia, the princess of Saillune, who becomes a kind of clumsy counterpart. Martina’s romantic interests are fleeting and often end in disappointment when she discovers that the object of her affection does not meet her idealized expectations. She briefly hires Zelgadis as a bodyguard but is betrayed when he sides with Lina. She becomes infatuated with Gourry after seeing him in a bathhouse but is turned off by his lack of intelligence. Xellos rescues her from bandits and becomes the subject of her longest romantic obsession until she learns he is a demon. Finally, she falls for Zangulus, a brash mercenary, and the two marry in a makeshift ceremony. Her interactions with Lina evolve from outright hostility to a grudging alliance, and she ultimately proves willing to sacrifice herself for the cause.
Martina’s development is one of gradual growth from a spoiled, vengeful princess into a more mature and cooperative individual, though she retains her eccentricities and dramatic tendencies. She remains a memorable figure in Slayers NEXT for her over-the-top personality, her invented religion, and her constant but ultimately harmless attempts to vex Lina.
