Description
Martina Zoana Mel Navratilova is a princess of the kingdom of Zoana and a character created exclusively for the television series Slayers NEXT. She initially appears as an antagonist, driven by revenge after Lina Inverse and her companions thwart the Zoana royal family’s plan to capture Princess Amelia and subsequently destroy the Zoana castle with the Dragon Slave spell. From that point onward, Martina dedicates herself to seeking vengeance against Lina, frequently stalking the group and attempting to interfere with their adventures.
Martina’s personality is lively and vivacious, but she also displays a strong tendency toward extreme obsession, whether it be her quest for revenge, her romantic infatuations, or her devotion to a fictional demon god named Zoamelgustar, whom she invented and worships fervently. She often carries a talisman representing this deity and engages in one-sided conversations with herself while pretending to be the god, switching her voice and expression. Martina is also fickle in her affections, developing crushes on several male characters throughout the series: she is initially attracted to Zelgadis, then Gourry Gabriev, later Xellos, and finally Zangulus, whom she eventually marries. Each romantic interest ends in disappointment when she discovers something about the person that does not match her idealized expectations.
As a sorceress, Martina is considered below average, but she has a notable talent for casting curses. These curses are not extremely powerful but prove to be persistent and annoying, especially to Lina. Beyond magic, Martina is resourceful and skilled in manual crafts, often making and selling items such as paper flowers or Zoamelgustar talismans to support herself after losing her royal status. Her clumsiness and tendency to overreact place her as a comic foil and a source of mild annoyance for the main group.
Despite her initial role as an antagonist, Martina undergoes development over the course of the series. She gradually shifts from a vengeful nuisance to a more sympathetic figure and eventually becomes an ally to Lina and her friends. During the final battle against Hellmaster Phibrizo, Martina is seemingly killed, but in her last moments she encourages Lina to keep fighting and save Gourry. This act demonstrates her underlying goodwill and capacity for selflessness. After the conflict, she marries Zangulus in a makeshift church while her kingdom is still being rebuilt.
Martina’s key relationships include her rivalry-turned-friendship with Lina, her passing romantic interests in various male characters, and her eventual partnership with Zangulus. She also shares a bond of mutual support with Amelia, another princess, as the two often rely on each other during difficult situations. Overall, Martina’s journey from a revenge-driven princess to a loyal friend highlights her growth, while her eccentricities and comedic persistence make her a memorable part of Slayers NEXT.
