Description
Kanzel is a middle-ranking mazoku, a race of demonic beings, who appears as a primary antagonist in the anime series Slayers Next. He serves under the chaos dragon Garv, a powerful lord of the mazoku. In the anime, Kanzel operates in partnership with another mazoku named Mazenda, and the two are the principal agents of the conflict that unfolds in the kingdom of Saillune.
Kanzel has a cold and calculating demeanor. His personality is defined by a pragmatic and ruthless ambition, showing little regard for human life. He and Mazenda insert themselves into a royal succession dispute, acting as retainers to Prince Christopher, the younger brother of the ruling Prince Philionel. They form a contract with Christopher's son, Alfred, manipulating him as a puppet to destabilize the kingdom and seize the throne. However, their true goal is far more personal: to lure the powerful sorceress Lina Inverse into a conflict where they can eliminate her. During a climactic battle, he offers Lina the chance to join the mazoku, promising to spare her friends if she does, which she refuses on principle.
Kanzel’s role in the story is that of a major direct threat to Lina Inverse and her companions. After Mazenda is killed by Lina using the Sword of Light, Kanzel is left to fight the group alone. Their final battle takes place atop a massive floating mass of land that Kanzel himself levitates high above Saillune. His defeat is the catalyst for the resolution of this story arc, though it triggers a final, desperate crisis.
His most significant relationship is with his ally, Mazenda. Together, they form a formidable and complementary team. While Mazenda possesses the unique ability to seal the spell-casting abilities of others using a magical pentagram, Kanzel provides overwhelming offensive and spatial control. This partnership allows them to corner Lina and her friends multiple times. He also has a purely transactional relationship with Alfred, disposing of the prince without hesitation once he no longer serves a purpose. His primary adversarial relationship is with Lina Inverse, as he consistently underestimates her resilience and capacity to learn new magic powerful enough to destroy him.
Throughout the arc, Kanzel himself undergoes little personal development; he remains a consistent and formidable force. The development lies in how the protagonists must adapt to overcome him. Lina is forced to grow in power, first by relying on the Sword of Light and then by unleashing the Ragna Blade, a spell of the nightmare dimension, to finally destroy him. The destruction of Kanzel also has a direct consequence on the environment, as his death causes the massive landmass he was levitating to plummet towards the city below.
Kanzel’s most notable ability is the manipulation of space and dimensions. He can teleport instantly, manipulate the fabric of reality to prevent his opponents from attacking him effectively, and even transport people into alternate dimensions under his control. He is also able to partially exist on the astral side, making him incredibly difficult to hit with conventional magic or physical attacks. This power, combined with his ruthlessness, makes him one of the most challenging adversaries Lina faces in the series, ultimately requiring the forbidden Ragna Blade to cut through his defenses and slay him on the astral plane.
