Description
Gaav, also known as the Chaos Dragon or Demon Dragon King, is a high-ranking mazoku and one of the five direct subordinates of Ruby Eye Shabranigdu. He serves as a primary antagonist in the anime Slayers NEXT. Over a thousand years before the events of the series, Gaav was responsible for the death of the Water Dragon God Ragradia during the Kouma War. In retaliation, Ragradia sealed Gaav into a human body, attempting to mirror the seal placed on the Dark Lord by the Flare Dragon Ceifeed. This imprisonment dramatically weakened Gaav, preventing him from returning to the astral plane at will and fusing his mazoku soul with a human vessel over repeated reincarnations.
Despite this limitation, Gaav remains immensely powerful. Even in his weakened state, the most potent magic in the world cannot harm him, and he is able to attack on the astral plane, defeating even Xellos in that realm. His true form is that of a colossal, crimson three-headed dragon, and the destructive spell Gaav Flare draws upon his power. In his human guise, he appears as a tall, broad-shouldered man with very long red hair, black eyes, and a white coat, always carrying a large sword.
Gaav’s personality is brash, headstrong, and ruthless. He has a contemptuous laugh and a blunt, rude demeanor. He lost interest in killing the remaining gods after his battle with Ragradia but remains as cruel and calculating as ever. He enjoys fighting more than any of the other five subordinates, and his actions are driven by a desire to defy both his fellow mazoku lords and the overarching plans of his master. He rebelled against the Demon King of the North and later started a war with the other mazoku lords by bargaining with the golden dragons to disrupt their schemes, taking advantage of the God Sealing Barrier that kept the other lords stationary.
Gaav’s primary motivation in Slayers NEXT is to destroy Lina Inverse, whom he sees as a key piece in Hellmaster Fibrizo’s larger plan. Upon learning that Fibrizo had sent Xellos to accompany Lina, Gaav orders his minions to target her. He also attempts to manipulate the Sorcerers’ Association in Atlas and tries to recruit Lina to his side. His servant Seigram, a mazoku as powerful as Xellos, acts as his agent. Additionally, Gaav encountered the last surviving ancient dragon, Valgarv, during the war of their extermination and transformed him into a chimeric demon-dragon hybrid, making Valgarv his unwilling servant. This act later influences the events of Slayers TRY.
Throughout the series, Gaav’s position shifts from seeming mastermind to pawn. He confronts Lina and her group on multiple occasions, including a battle at the Temple of Sand and a final showdown at the Dragon’s Peak. Lina injures him with the Ragna Blade, cutting through his astral barrier, but Gaav survives. Fibrizo, who has been orchestrating events, then reveals himself and destroys Gaav completely, noting that the human and mazoku parts of Gaav have become inseparably fused, making total obliteration the only option. Gaav’s development lies in his transition from a proud, rebellious lord of demons to a tragic figure outmaneuvered by a more cunning enemy, his lingering humanity a liability in the eternal war between gods and demons.
