Description
Ayumi Kato is the younger brother of Masaru Kato, one of the primary protagonists of the series. Ayumu is a young boy who exists almost entirely outside of the violent missions orchestrated by the mysterious black sphere known as Gantz. Unlike the many characters forced to hunt aliens in exchange for their lives, Ayumu never enters the Gantz room or participates in any of its deadly games. His significance to the story is purely emotional, serving as the primary motivation for his older brother to survive and find a way to return home.
Born to parents who died when the brothers were young, Ayumu and Masaru lived with a strict and uncharitable aunt who frequently mistreated Ayumu. To escape this abusive environment, Masaru rented a small apartment where the two could live together. Despite his youth, Ayumu consistently displayed a maturity beyond his years, telling his brother that he would find a job himself to help with the rent. This quiet determination and resilience in the face of hardship is a core aspect of his personality. He endures persecution and injustice with steadfast faith that his brother will return to him, believing in Masaru even when circumstances seem hopeless.
