Description
Giichi Furuta is an elderly man who owns a bookstore. His life comes to an end when, enraged after a repeated theft from his shop, he chases a thief down the street. The pursuit continues for several blocks until Furuta is struck by a car whose driver was distracted by her cellphone. After realizing she hit something, the driver flees the scene without looking back, leaving Furuta to die. This death results in his consciousness being transferred to the Gantz room, where he finds himself forced to participate in a violent mission.

Upon arriving in the Gantz room, Furuta immediately adopts a leadership position, urging everyone to remain calm and to discuss their situation rationally. He consistently discourages violence and attempts to resolve conflict through conversation, showing a mature and level-headed personality. He exhibits significant sympathy for another participant named Hajime, whom he believes is being brainwashed and used by a more aggressive team member, Kajiura.

His primary motivation is to maintain order and protect the other members of his team. This is driven by his desire to stop senseless killing and to find a peaceful solution to the violent scenario they have been thrust into. His role in the story is that of a moral counterbalance, a figure of authority and empathy who stands in stark opposition to the brutal and chaotic behavior of characters like Hajime.

Furuta’s key relationships are defined by his interactions with the other participants. He forms a protective bond with a young woman named Mika, taking her under his wing. His most significant relationship is with Hajime. Initially, Furuta shows him sympathy, believing him to be an innocent pawn. However, after witnessing the death of another member named Saito, Furuta comes to a horrifying realization: Hajime was never brainwashed or manipulated, but is instead an unrepentant and cold-blooded psychopath.

This realization solidifies his resolve to stop Hajime. He confronts him, allowing Mika to follow. As he prepares to shoot Hajime with the X-gun, a standard Gantz weapon, Hajime grabs an uzi and shoots off both of Furuta's arms, incapacitating him. Unable to defend himself, Furuta is subjected to further torment as Hajime forces a grenade into his mouth, attaching the pin to a string tied around Mika’s neck so that any movement from her would kill him. To torture them both, Hajime beats Mika with a belt, forcing her to move. In a final act of determination to save Mika, Furuta pulls away from her. This action triggers the grenade, blowing himself up and causing serious injury to Hajime in the process.

Through this sacrifice, Furuta undergoes a clear development, transforming from a peaceful negotiator into a courageous martyr willing to give his own life to protect another and stop an evil force. His notable abilities are not supernatural, but rather his strong moral compass, his capacity for leadership under extreme pressure, and his physical courage in the face of certain death, ultimately using his own destruction as a weapon to save someone else.
