Kayo Sugihara is a member of the Tokyo team, having died alongside her grandson in a major traffic accident while she was driving him home. In the Gantz room, she appears as a kind, elderly woman of seventy-four years with short white curled hair and large glasses, typically dressed in a thick sweater and long skirt. Her personality is defined by her role as a grandmother: she is sweet, caring, and deeply maternal, spending most of her time in the mission comforting her frightened grandson. She finds the entire situation of the game overwhelming and alien, and her primary motivation is simply to return home and be away from the danger. She is not a natural leader and shows little initiative, instead preferring to rely on others to take charge, particularly Masaru Kato, who convinces her and her grandson to wear the Gantz suits. However, when it appears that Kato will be overwhelmed by the aliens, she does show a brief moment of resolve, telling her grandson she will fight the enemies and urging him to run away. Throughout her only mission, Kayo demonstrates almost no fighting skill or ability. Her advanced age makes her physically infirm, and her typical response to threats is to flee rather than confront them. Despite her physical limitations and lack of combat prowess, she remains a motherly figure whose actions are always rooted in care for her grandson and trust in those she perceives as stronger leaders.
