Description
JJ is an American martial artist visiting Japan who becomes a reluctant participant in the deadly games orchestrated by the mysterious black sphere known as Gantz. He is a man of few words, described as very quiet and thoughtful, preferring to observe his surroundings from the back of the Gantz room rather than engage in the panic and confusion that grips most new participants. His physical appearance is that of a fit adult male, with blonde hair and blue eyes, fitting his background as a foreigner in Tokyo.

In terms of personality, JJ is defined by his calm demeanor and disciplined approach. When he first arrives in the room alongside other new recruits, he remains silent, simply following the lead of a priest who prays, as this is the only activity that makes sense to him. Rather than succumbing to fear or hysteria, he demonstrates a focused and analytical nature. This is most clearly shown when he watches Masaru Kato lift two people to demonstrate the power of the Gantz suit. Intrigued and perhaps skeptical, JJ challenges Kato to a test of strength, striking him hard not out of malice but to personally gauge the suit's capabilities, a practical and tactical decision typical of a trained fighter.

JJ’s primary motivation is survival, and he relies on his existing martial arts expertise as his main tool for this. Unlike many who desperately search for the Gantz suits or weapons, JJ does not put on a suit before being teleported to a mission, nor does he bring one, suggesting a degree of confidence in his own physical abilities or a fatalistic acceptance of his situation. During the mission at the Buddhist temple, his role is that of a capable but ultimately overwhelmed front-line fighter. He uses his martial arts skills to take down several of the human-sized alien statues on his own, proving his competence against lesser threats. When Kato divides the surviving participants into two groups, JJ joins the group led by Hojo, following along with the others as they are forced to push forward into increasingly dangerous territory.

Relationships are not a significant part of JJ’s character arc, as he is a solitary figure who interacts with the group only out of necessity. He has no known relatives or deep connections to other characters in the Gantz room. His most notable interaction is his one-off challenge to Kato, which establishes mutual respect more than a friendship. He is a lone wolf whose fate is tied to the group's overall failure.

JJ's development is cut short by his early death, but his brief time in the story serves to highlight the brutal and unforgiving nature of the Gantz missions. He is a competent and rational individual, which the discussion around the series often uses as a point of reference: he and another skilled participant, Tojo, represent some of the more capable people that Gantz selects, but their misfortune is being sent on the Buddhist Temple mission, one of the deadliest the Tokyo team ever faced. His skill alone is not enough.

His notable ability is his proficiency in martial arts, which allows him to fight effectively even without relying on the advanced Gantz technology. In his final fight, he engages one of the alien spawn and initially gains the upper hand. However, the fight turns brutal and close-quarters. JJ gets his hand trapped, and the alien snaps the bone. In a desperate, last-ditch act of defiance, JJ headbutts his opponent. Before he can recover, another alien spawn breaks his neck, killing him. His longest and most emotional line, delivered in this moment of desperation, is a furious exclamation: Fuck this and FUCK YOU. This final outburst is a stark contrast to his usual quiet nature, revealing the raw terror and rage that exists beneath his calm exterior when faced with certain death.
