Description
Kinji Nishikawa is a minor but memorable character from the anime and manga series Gantz, known for his brief and chaotic presence during the Tanaka Alien mission. He is introduced as a member of the Tokyo Gantz Team, brought into the deadly game after a violent death in his everyday life. In the manga, Kinji is portrayed simply as a thuggish and aggressive motorcyclist who enjoys bullying random people for amusement, while the anime adaptation expands his background slightly, depicting him as a construction site worker by day who also participates in a biker gang at night. It is this gang affiliation that leads to his death; he and three fellow members are lured into a trap by a rival biker gang, severely outnumbered, and killed in the ensuing fight, which transports them to the mysterious room containing the black sphere known as Gantz.
Physically, Kinji is described as a slim, thin man of average height, appearing to be around twenty-nine years old. He has blonde hair, which is cut to ear-length, and black eyes. His typical attire consists of casual jackets and shirts, though in the anime he is also seen wearing a construction site jumpsuit and helmet. On the cover of one manga volume, he is illustrated wearing the form-fitting black Gantz suit, even though he refuses to don it during the mission itself. His voice in the Japanese version of the anime is provided by Takahiro Yoshino.
Personality-wise, Kinji is a brutal, arrogant, and cruel bully. He is consistently rude and displays little regard for the thoughts or feelings of others, driven by a selfish and uncaring nature. He demonstrates a follower mentality, eager to impress his fellow gang members and laughing boisterously at the misfortune of those he considers beneath him. This behavior is exemplified before his death when he and his gang force a young boy to humiliate his own father at a convenience store, an act they find highly amusing. Upon arriving in the Gantz room, he refuses to take the situation seriously, laughing and speculating that it might be part of a television show. His overconfidence in his own physical fitness leads him to mock others, and he stubbornly refuses to put on the protective Gantz suit, deriding it while still claiming it as his own and preventing anyone else from using it.
Kinji's role in the story is that of an antagonistic newcomer who serves as a negative example within the Gantz team. During the mission to eliminate the Tanaka Alien, his behavior is marked by cowardice and a lack of cooperation. When the more experienced hunter Joichiro Nishi is attacked by the alien and calls for help, Kinji merely stands by and laughs at his predicament. Instead of engaging the target, he joins the other new hunters in an attempt to simply flee the mission area and escape the game. His attempt to run away proves to be his undoing; as he outruns some of the others, he crosses the invisible boundary of the mission zone, triggering the explosive device implanted in his head by Gantz. His head is blown off, demonstrating the lethal consequences of defying the rules of the game. In the anime adaptation, he and fellow gang member Haruya Numata attempt to use a cell phone to call for help before his head explodes.
His key relationships are limited almost exclusively to the other members of his biker gang, particularly Haruya Numata and Tetsuo. While he is part of their group and seeks their approval, his loyalty is shallow and conditional. He shows no genuine grief when the gang member Kosuke Nakajima is killed by Nishi in the Gantz room, coldly dismissing the death. His interactions with the main protagonists, Kei Kurono and Masaru Kato, are minimal and largely defined by his arrogant mockery of their situation. He is also noted for attempting to sexually assault Kei Kishimoto in front of the other gang members, further underscoring his predatory and amoral nature.
Kinji shows no significant character development due to his extremely short tenure in the series; he remains a brutish and unrepentant figure up to his swift death. In terms of notable abilities, he is depicted as possessing very little combat skill or strategic thinking. His fighting style is crude, consisting of wild, untrained punches and kicks. He seems to lack the courage to confront enemies alone, preferring to act only when backed up by others. His only demonstrated physical asset is his fitness, as he is able to outrun the much younger participant, Ryota Sugihara. Ultimately, his defining trait is his complete lack of utility in the mission, choosing to flee rather than fight, a decision that leads directly to his demise.
