Description
Chada is a secondary character in NieA_7 who presents himself as an Indian man, though it is eventually revealed that his human guise is a deliberate choice, as he is actually an alien. His appearance is striking and carefully curated to fit his adopted persona, featuring dark skin, a thick mustache, large eyebrows, and a turban he wears at all times. He is an adult male with black hair and black eyes, often seen wearing clothing that aligns with his chosen cultural aesthetic.
Chada runs a small convenience store named AM11PM7, which is notable for exclusively selling food items flavored with curry. His personality is defined by an intense but deeply flawed fascination with Indian culture. Although he has completely immersed himself in this identity, greeting customers with Namaste and playing Indian-style theme music from a radio, his knowledge is a collection of grand misconceptions and factual errors. This extends to his understanding of religion, as he has been known to confuse the customs of Hinduism and Islam. His grasp of the Japanese language is also imperfect, leading him to deliver crude jokes and make vulgar remarks with a completely straight face, often showing a lack of awareness of social propriety.
Despite these eccentricities, his motivations are rooted in a genuine, if misguided, attempt to participate in and understand human culture. He runs his business and organizes social events on the second floor of his shop, such as gatherings for a small, fixed group of alien acquaintances. His role in the story is primarily that of a colorful local fixture and a source of situational comedy. He serves as a foil to the more grounded human characters and a representative of the broader alien community trying to find its place in a human world. His relationship with the main alien character, Niea, is based on a shared, marginalized status as part of the lower class of alien society, though their interactions are largely limited to Chada being a purveyor of food and an odd, dependable presence in the neighborhood.
Chada displays a notable ambition to expand his business ventures, though these attempts are often bizarre and end in failure. In one instance, he closed his convenience store to convert the space into a bathhouse as part of a misguided multifaceted business strategy. This venture, which involved burning aromatic spices, was eventually shut down by the police, an outcome he narrowly escaped due to his status as an alien. Despite his apparent success in maintaining a business, his establishment is described as selling strange-looking curry bento boxes that are, paradoxically, considered delicious by Niea. His store also contains books and records, though the selection is notably dated, revealing Chada's world as one suspended in a peculiar, anachronistic bubble. While the turban hides his alien antenna from view, it is confirmed to exist, and in other adaptations, he is depicted as having a highly advanced model.
