Description
Mikiyasu Shinshi is a member of the Special Vehicles Section 2, Division 2 in the Tokyo Metropolitan Police. He was born in Fujieda, Shizuoka Prefecture in 1971, making him twenty-seven years old in 1998. He is a graduate of Tokyo University and worked as an office employee for a general trading company before his recruitment into the police force. He was scouted by Captain Kiichi Goto and assigned directly to Special Vehicle Section 2.
Shinshi presents a meek and mild-mannered exterior and can be easily pushed around by his more forceful colleagues. He is the only married officer in his unit and is deeply devoted to his wife, Tamiko, and fiercely protective of her. When provoked, especially by mockery directed at himself or his wife, his demeanor changes dramatically and he becomes explosively angry, capable of startling even the most aggressive member of the team.
Within Section 2, Shinshi serves primarily as the driver and operator of the unit’s carrier vehicle, a role that keeps him out of direct front-line action but is vital for transporting and supporting the Patlabor mecha. He possesses considerable talent in programming and computer systems, a skill that complements his analytical mind and makes him an effective backup and command operator for Unit 2. He often works in a support capacity, handling data and communications during operations.
Shinshi’s relationship with his wife is a defining aspect of his character, and his home life is occasionally referenced in the series. Among his fellow officers, he maintains a professional but sometimes tense dynamic with the hotheaded pilot Isao Ohta, whose abrasive behavior is a frequent trigger for Shinshi’s temper. He respects Captain Goto, who recruited him and trusts his judgment. Over the course of the series and films, Shinshi participates in major operations, including a risky strategy in the second theatrical film that required personal courage despite his family obligations. Later narratives set after his police career show him co-founding a security company with Goto and Ohta, which fails, before achieving success as a software entrepreneur with a friend.
Shinshi’s notable abilities include his technical aptitude with computers and electronics, his skill in driving the carrier vehicle, and his capacity for calm analysis under pressure. His explosive temper, though rarely seen, is a hidden resource that can intimidate others and surprise even his closest teammates.
