Description
Manjimutt is a Yo-kai of the Eerie tribe, classified as Rank E with a Fire attribute, who later belongs to the Mononoke tribe in later installments. He appears as a brown poodle with a human face, typically wearing glasses because his right eye is only half-open. His origin traces back to a tragic human life: he was once a salaryman who lost his job due to budget cuts. Unable to face his wife and rebellious daughter, he took to drinking at an oden stand. One night, while wandering in a delirious state, a stack of wooden planks fell on him and a toy poodle simultaneously, causing their spirits to fuse into the Yo-kai known as Manjimutt. Because of this unusual merging, Manjimutt remains visible to ordinary humans without requiring a Yo-kai Watch, often leading to misunderstandings and encounters with the police.
In terms of personality, Manjimutt is a hapless and self‑loathing creature. He feels disappointed that he is still treated as a human rather than as a dog, which is what he desired in his afterlife. He tries to embrace human life, yet his canine instincts repeatedly land him in trouble. Despite his insecurities, he enjoys scaring people who are frightened by a poodle with a man’s face. He harbors an ambitious dream of one day becoming a CEO, though his incompetence and poor planning often thwart his efforts. He speaks in short, punctuated sentences and expresses fondness for Chinese food and curry.
Manjimutt’s primary motivation is to be accepted as a regular dog, yet he also pursues the goal of business success. This contradiction fuels much of his comedic role in the story. In the anime, he has recurring mini‑episodes that follow his attempts to live out his dreams and avoid imprisonment. He frequently encounters the police due to his suspicious appearance and behavior. In the games, he is encountered in places such as the Secret Byway in Blossom Heights, the Tucked Away Lot trash area, and the Infinite Inferno, or can be obtained from the Crank‑a‑kai using purple coins.
Manjimutt’s key relationships involve the human protagonist, Nate (or Hailey in later versions), who befriends him after his inspiriting mishaps. Whisper acts as a guide during these befriending events, offering polite advice that contrasts with Manjimutt’s ugly self‑image. Jibanyan, the cat Yo‑kai, teams up with him in battles, and their dynamic plays on Jibanyan’s bravado versus Manjimutt’s incompetence. Manjimutt also evolves into Multimutt, either by fusing with another Manjimutt in the first game or by reaching level 22 in Yo‑kai Watch 2. This evolved form amplifies his fire powers while retaining his core personality.
In terms of development, Manjimutt remains a static comic character, though his evolution symbolizes a desire to overcome his self‑loathing. He does not undergo deep narrative growth but serves as a recurring source of humor and a dependable Fire‑attribute ally.
Manjimutt’s notable abilities include his Soultimate Move, Creepy Superbite, which allows him to bite all enemies in a frenzy, dealing multiple hits of damage. His Inspirit, Confusion, startles foes into attacking their own allies, causing friendly fire. He also has a passive Skill called Mutt’s Paradise, which provides a stat boost to adjacent Yo‑kai that share the same skill. In battle, he uses basic chomp attacks and fire techniques. His powers grow stronger the more he is used in battle, and he takes reduced damage from Water attacks due to his Fire attribute.
