TV-Series
Description
Bernardo, whose full name is Bernardo Bernstein, is an eleven-year-old student attending Springdale Elementary School. He lives in the Flower Hill neighborhood of Seaside Town. Known to his friends by the nickname Bear and called Bernardinho by his mother, he presents a striking physical appearance. He has a robust build, spiky black hair, and distinctive dark rings under his eyes, with a plaster often found on his left cheek. His typical outfit consists of a blue varsity jacket with white sleeves, a white shirt, brown shorts, and white sneakers, a look that can initially come across as intimidating.

Despite his thuggish exterior, Bernardo has a gentle, sensitive, and somewhat bumbling personality. He is highly emotional and prone to bursting into tears, and he is a self-professed glutton who lacks athleticism and often displays clumsiness. His sensitivity extends to a pronounced fear of his frequently scolding mother, Mrs. Barbosa, and he finds the mother of his friend Eddie even more frightening. This gentle nature makes him a deeply loyal friend, especially to his close companions Nate, Katie, and Eddie. His family life is notably influenced by his dominant mother, and he has a younger sister named Bernarda, sometimes called Bearmie, who lives in America with her boyfriend Arnold. His father is mentioned but has never been given a name.

Throughout the series, Bernardo shares in various misadventures with his friends. In the video games, he is the focus of several quests. One such quest, The Ring In The Pond, sees him asking Nate to retrieve his parents' lost engagement ring. Another, The Extreme Dare, results in him being trapped by a Yo-kai after accidentally taking one of her rib bones. A recurring series of quests in Yo-kai Watch 2, titled Bear Boy Origins, The Bear Boy Returns, and Ultimate Bear Boy, depict his comedic and ultimately chaotic attempts to become a superhero, which always end in disaster and reprimands from his mother. These events highlight his gullibility and tendency toward misfortune.

In the first Yo-kai Watch film, he is seen with Nate, Katie, and Eddie discussing strange occurrences where objects begin to enlarge. In the third film, The Great Adventure of the Flying Whale & the Double World, Nyan!, the character appears in live-action segments portrayed by an adult actor, leading Nate to humorously note his aged appearance. In this story, Bernardo obtains a rare Emperor Krills toy and naively negotiates its sale with Eddie. The anime also reveals in one episode that he has a crush on a classmate named Lulu. Compared to his other friends, Bernardo experiences the fewest instances of being inspirited by Yo-kai. Later series entries, such as Yo-kai Watch Shadowside, have hinted that he may have moved away from Springdale, though his exact whereabouts remain unconfirmed.
