Description
Kumashima Gorota, also known by the nickname Kuma or the English name Barnaby Bernstein, is a recurring human character in Yo-kai Watch. He is a classmate and close friend of the protagonist, Amano Keita, and is part of a tight-knit group that includes the other classmates Kanchi Imada and Fumika Kodama. Gorota attends Springdale Elementary School and lives in the traditional Dandanzaka neighborhood. His family runs the Kumashima Workshop on the ground floor of their home; he lives with both his parents and, while his younger sister Bearmi is frequently away on a homestay in the United States, the household is a warm if sometimes chaotic environment.

Physically Gorota stands out as the largest and most robust boy in class five-two. He has short black hair often styled in an upright, tousled fashion, and his outfit typically consists of a white shirt with blue cuff details, a blue jacket with yellow buttons, and casual shorts, giving him a slightly biker-like look. Despite his imposing build and his position as the de facto tough kid of the group, his personality is gentle, simple, and quick to tears. He is emotionally open and can be easily moved, whether by a touching moment or a stern word from his mother, who firmly calls him Goro-chan and to whom he inevitably defers.

Gorota’s motivations are grounded in everyday childhood desires. He loves fried chicken, regularly indulges in snacks, and prefers fun and friendship over conflict. He is not particularly athletic or studious, but he enthusiastically joins in the group’s adventures and the yo-kai-related chaos that surrounds Keita. His open-hearted nature means he holds a genuine, albeit awkward, crush on classmate Kobayashi Ai, whom he admires from a distance with a mixture of shyness and determination.

As a friend, Gorota is loyal and straightforward. He sometimes teases Keita alongside Kanchi, but these moments never undermine the group’s overall camaraderie. He stands by his friends when trouble arises and often provides a comical, soft-hearted counterbalance to the more eccentric characters. Throughout the series he does not undergo a dramatic transformation, but he is consistently present, offering warmth and familiar humor. In certain alternate storylines, notably within the Black Yo-kai Watch continuity, he is transformed into the centipede monster Mukade Otoko, retaining his human head while a giant centipede body replaces his own, an unnerving ability that briefly casts him into a more monstrous role before returning to his usual self. In his everyday life, however, Gorota remains a gentle giant whose presence anchors the human side of the series with simple sincerity and a big appetite.
