Description
Kenichi, whose full name is Kenichi Shikishima, serves as a central figure in the 2001 anime film Metropolis, acting as the audience's viewpoint into the sprawling, dystopian city. He arrives in Metropolis from Japan alongside his uncle, the private investigator Shunsaku Ban, for what is meant to be a straightforward detective mission. They are searching for a doctor involved in illegal organ trading, but Kenichi quickly finds himself swept into a far larger and more dangerous conspiracy.
Appearance-wise, Kenichi is a young boy who typically wears a thick, detective-style jacket resembling his uncle's, complemented by a yellow scarf and a red undershirt. His hair is often depicted as dark, appearing either green or black depending on the lighting, and he has brown or green eyes in different portrayals.
In terms of personality, Kenichi is defined by his kind-hearted and empathetic nature. He is a quintessential nice guy: respectful, calm, and levelheaded, especially in contrast to the chaotic and violent world around him. His defining trait is his friendliness towards all living beings, which notably extends to the robots of Metropolis, a population that is largely scorned and persecuted by humans. He is not a fighter by nature, preferring to avoid trouble, and serves more as a technical pacifist who only resorts to physical aggression when pushed to an absolute extreme. His role is that of a fish out of water, an innocent outsider with no connection to the city's political intrigues, which allows the audience to discover the world of Metropolis alongside him.
Kenichi's primary motivation throughout the story shifts from assisting his uncle with their investigation to a much more personal goal: protecting and understanding a lost girl he discovers in a burning laboratory, whom he names Tima. He is driven by a fundamental decency and a desire to do right by her, unaware at first that she is a highly advanced android. His key relationships are central to the plot. His bond with his uncle, Shunsaku Ban, provides the initial framework for his journey, but his relationship with Tima becomes the emotional core of the film. He acts as her guide and teacher, patiently helping her learn to speak and understand the world, and he remains fiercely loyal to her even as the truth of her nature is revealed. He also forms a brief but significant connection with Atlas, a leader of a robot-sympathizing rebel group in the city's underground, witnessing firsthand the revolutionaries' anger and their eventual, brutal failure. His primary antagonist is Rock Holmes, the adopted son of the city's ruler, Duke Red, who relentlessly chases Kenichi and Tima in an attempt to eliminate her.
Over the course of the narrative, Kenichi undergoes significant development. He begins as a somewhat passive assistant but transforms into a determined protector. This is most evident after he witnesses Rock shoot his uncle, an act that pushes the normally gentle boy to attack Rock in a blind rage. His innocence is continually challenged by the cruelty he sees, from the casual destruction of robots to the failures of the revolution. In the film's devastating climax, he demonstrates incredible courage and resolve, desperately trying to save Tima even as the Ziggurat crumbles around them and as she, now corrupted by the city's superweapon, turns on him. His development culminates in the aftermath of the tragedy; despite losing Tima, he chooses to stay in the ruins of Metropolis, eventually growing up to work alongside the surviving robots, suggesting a future built on the compassion he showed throughout the story.
While Kenichi has no superhuman powers, he possesses notable abilities in the form of his unwavering determination and resilience. He is, in effect, made of iron, enduring severe physical hardships including beatings, being drugged, electrocuted, and strangled, yet he continues to push forward in his quest to save his friend. His strength is not physical but moral, an unbreakable spirit that allows him to face overwhelming forces and tragedy without surrendering to despair or hatred.
