Description
In the anime film Escaflowne: The Movie, Lord Dilandau Albatou is a primary antagonist and a high-ranking commander within the Zaibach empire. He leads the Dragon Slayers, an elite squad of pilots who operate powerful mecha known as guymelefs. Unlike his counterpart in the television series, this version of Dilandau is always male and has a modified origin: he is a human who has been infused with Draconian blood, granting him abilities beyond those of ordinary soldiers.

Dilandau is characterized by a volatile and unstable personality. He is intensely narcissistic, arrogant, and vain, taking great pride in his appearance and combat prowess. He is hot‑headed and impulsive, acting on his desires for destruction without restraint. His behavior often borders on sadistic, as he delights in causing chaos, burning villages, and reveling in the thrill of battle. Despite his cruel treatment of his subordinates, whom he frequently abuses verbally and physically, he is deeply emotionally dependent on them and becomes enraged when any harm comes to them. This contradictory dependence underscores his psychological fragility.

His primary motivation is a personal vendetta against the protagonist, Van Fanel. After Van wounds him during an early encounter, Dilandau becomes obsessively fixated on revenge. This grudge drives much of his actions throughout the story, overruling strategic considerations and fueling his relentless pursuit of Van and the legendary guymelef Escaflowne. He also harbors a general hatred for anyone he perceives as heroic or opposing Zaibach.

In the film, Dilandau serves directly under Folken, who is the main antagonist and leader of Zaibach. His relationship with Folken is that of a subordinate, but Dilandau is allowed considerable autonomy in his violent campaigns. He commands the Dragon Slayers with a mix of fear and loyalty; the team follows him fanatically despite his abuse. His interactions with other characters are limited, as he primarily engages in direct combat.

Dilandau’s role in the story is to act as a relentless pursuer of Van and a catalyst for conflict. He is responsible for numerous attacks on the protagonists and their allies. He pilots a custom red guymelef, the Alseides, which is equipped with advanced weaponry including flame‑throwers and a stealth cloak. Additionally, due to his Draconian infusion, he exhibits supernatural abilities: he is capable of wielding magic in battle and, as he states, possesses wings that allow him to fly. In the latter part of the film, he dons a draconic armor to confront Van directly, but is ultimately defeated when Escaflowne, driven by the chaos of flames, overwhelms him. His defeat marks the end of his personal vendetta, though the larger conflict continues under Folken.

Dilandau’s development in the film is minimal; he does not undergo the identity crisis or redemption seen in the series. Instead, he remains a consistently ruthless and unstable force of destruction, defined by his vanity, pyromania, and obsessive hatred. His notable abilities include skilled guymelef piloting, magical attacks, flight, and a willingness to use any means to achieve his vengeful goals.
