Description
Noboru Yoshikawa is a student in Class 3-4 at Holy Forest Academy. He is physically small and slender for his age, with a sluggish appearance, untidy bowl-cut black hair, and half-lidded brown eyes that make him look perpetually drowsy. Born on December 22, he has a history of severe bullying, primarily at the hands of his classmate Anko Uehara and her friends, who physically beat him and humiliated him by drawing on his body with permanent markers. This relentless abuse left him deeply introverted, withdrawn, and prone to keeping his feelings to himself. Before meeting Eikichi Onizuka, he attempted suicide by jumping from the school roof, but Onizuka saved him and became the first adult to genuinely care about his well-being. Onizuka’s intervention gave Yoshikawa a reason to trust again, and the two quickly formed a close friendship. Onizuka often borrows Yoshikawa’s video games and belongings, but in return provides the encouragement and protection Yoshikawa never had.
Yoshikawa is extremely introverted and initially lacks self-confidence, but he is also deeply loyal and resourceful. When Onizuka faced dismissal, Yoshikawa undressed in front of the entire school to reveal the evidence of his own bullying, proving that Onizuka had not caused the situation. He also sold his entire game collection and offered his life savings to help Onizuka pay off a debt. Yoshikawa’s quiet bravery emerges most clearly during the school trip to Okinawa: when Anko fell off a cliff into the sea, he jumped in without hesitation, dragged her unconscious body to the surface, and later calmly searched for an escape route while comforting her inside a cave. He showed no fear despite the life-threatening circumstances. This act demonstrated that meeting Onizuka had given him the courage to stand up for himself and others.
Yoshikawa is exceptionally skilled at all types of games, not just video games. He is resourceful, able to build impromptu bottle rocket launchers and outmaneuver even the sharpest classmates in paintball. At a summer festival, he effortlessly won every prize Anko wanted while defeating challenges from a rival. His talent with games reflects a quick, strategic mind. He also bonds with the hikikomori student Yuuki Miyamori over their shared interest in trains, becoming Yuuki’s first real friend and encouraging him to return to school after a two-year absence.
His key relationships include a strong friendship with fellow gamer Kikuchi, a complex dynamic with Anko Uehara, and a pivotal bond with Onizuka. Anko’s bullying was rooted in her own past mistreatment by her brother, and later in the series she admits she has romantic feelings for Yoshikawa; they eventually go on a date. Yoshikawa’s development is marked by a gradual shift from a helpless victim to a confident young man capable of bravery, loyalty, and even leadership. His role in the story exemplifies Onizuka’s ability to reach the most wounded students and help them find their inner strength.
