Description
Eikichi Onizuka is the central protagonist of the Great Teacher Onizuka anime. At the start of the story he is a 22-year-old former juvenile delinquent who once led the Oni-Baku motorcycle gang that controlled the Shonan area alongside his best friend Ryuji Danma. After a youth spent fighting rival gangs and running wild, he graduated from a low-ranking university with a barely earned teaching license. His original reason for becoming a teacher was superficial, as he decided to enter the profession after witnessing the influence a teacher had over a schoolgirl he was pursuing, but over time he developed a genuine conscience and sense of purpose.

His personality is loud, presumptuous, and often vulgar. He is a chain smoker, a heavy eater, and unapologetically crude, frequently making lecherous comments and behaving in an impulsive, childlike manner. He appears brash and overconfident, yet underneath that surface he is actually shy and lacking in real confidence, especially around women, and he remains a virgin throughout much of the series. Despite his immature habits, he is not a simple character. He operates by his own straightforward reasoning and principles, possesses a strong personal conscience, and firmly believes people must take responsibility for their own actions. He can be playful and silly one moment and completely serious the next, and when a situation truly matters he commits himself fully to resolving it.

His driving motivation, which he states openly, is to become the greatest teacher ever. He despises the traditional education system and the way many teachers and administrators treat students with ignorance, condescension, or indifference. Rather than focusing on grades and routine schoolwork, he wants to teach life lessons and help his students find genuine happiness and purpose. He is hired at a private middle school, Holy Forest Academy, as a long-shot candidate to take over Class 3-4, a notoriously troubled class that has already driven one teacher to a mysterious death, another to a nervous breakdown, and a third to join a cult. His role in the story is to serve as the homeroom teacher of this class and to gradually win over its students through unorthodox, often reckless, and sometimes dangerous methods. Instead of enforcing authority through rules and punishment, he acts as a bridge between the students and the school staff, reaching out to each student individually to help them confront their personal problems.

His key relationships shape much of the series. Ryuji Danma remains his closest friend from his gang days and is one of the few people who truly understands him. Within the school, the principal Ryoko Sakurai places deep trust in him despite his behavior, while the vice-principal Hiroshi Uchiyamada constantly clashes with him and tries to have him fired. The teacher Azusa Fuyutsuki, who represents a more conventional approach to education, works alongside him and often finds herself caught between his methods and the school establishment. His most important relationships are with the students of Class 3-4, including early allies like Noboru Yoshikawa, Yoshito Kikuchi, and Kunio Murai, the brilliant and manipulative Urumi Kanzaki, and the class leader Miyabi Aizawa, who initially orchestrates campaigns against him. Through each confrontation, Onizuka refuses to abandon his students, even when they schemes against him, and he repeatedly risks his own safety to protect them.

His character develops steadily over the course of the series. He begins as a perverted, self-interested ex-delinquent who stumbles into teaching for the wrong reasons, and gradually transforms into a genuinely dedicated educator who earns the trust and respect of his class. His students initially mock or resist him, but one by one they come to see that he truly cares about their well-being. His reputation as the former leader of a feared gang gives him a unique credibility with troublesome students, and his past experiences allow him to relate to their struggles in ways ordinary teachers cannot. He frequently derives satisfaction not from academic success but from repairing the lives of his students, whether by breaking through a family's silence, rescuing a student from danger, or forcing a troubled teenager to confront her pain.

In terms of abilities, Onizuka possesses extraordinary physical strength and endurance. He is a second-degree black belt and was a college karate champion, can bench press roughly 150 kilograms, and maintains a punishing daily training routine. His body is remarkably durable, and he survives multiple falls from rooftops and other life-threatening situations while saving students and colleagues. He is also highly street smart, with a sharp practical intelligence that surfaces when he is genuinely motivated, and he is known for his ability to accomplish nearly anything when under enough pressure. He remains passionate about motorcycles and rides a Kawasaki 750 Road Star Z2, a holdover from his biker gang days. His most defining ability, however, is not physical. It is his capacity to understand what his students are going through, to meet them on their own level, and to show through his own actions that authority must be earned through genuine effort and shared struggle rather than through position or status.
