Description
The character known as Berg is consistently named Verg in all available sources regarding Blue Submarine No. 6, and he serves as the primary antagonist of the story. He is a member of the aquatic hybrid race created by the rogue scientist Zorndyke, often referred to as nereids, and holds the position of Admiral within Zorndyke's naval forces. Verg is a young man with distinct shark-like physical characteristics, which complement his aggressive and predatory nature.

Verg’s personality is defined by intense fits of anger, jealousy, and a deep-seated cruelty, particularly toward humans. He takes great pleasure in killing and destroying human settlements and vessels, believing this is the way to gain the approval of his creator, whom he calls Papa. His primary motivation is not ideological but deeply personal and almost childlike; he constantly seeks Zorndyke’s approval and believes that by exterminating humanity, he can make his Papa happy. This need for validation drives his relentless pursuit of the Blue Fleet and his savage attacks on humans, as he foolishly believes that humans are the source of Zorndyke's sadness.

In the story, Verg commands a formidable submersible battlecruiser known as the Phantom Ship, which is mounted on a massive whale-like entity. He is first seen destroying a port city and later hunting down Blue Submarine No. 6, making him the central physical threat that the protagonists must overcome. His role extends beyond that of a simple military commander; he is also a figure of terror among his own kind. He savagely attacks Mutio, another hybrid, for being touched and later saved by a human, using this as a justification to abuse her and later banish her for refusing to swear vengeance against humanity.

Verg’s key relationships are primarily with Zorndyke and Mutio. His relationship with Zorndyke is that of a son desperately seeking a father’s love and recognition, to the point where the scientist's death becomes the catalyst for his emotional breakdown. His relationship with Mutio is complex and abusive; he singles her out for punishment and casts her out, yet she is the only one who returns to him at his lowest point. In a moment of utter despair after Zorndyke's death, Verg attacks the protagonist Tetsu Hayami in a rage, but when Hayami refuses to fight back and speaks of coexistence, Verg’s worldview shatters. He is left crying helplessly in the shallows, unable to exact revenge, until Mutio returns to comfort him, and he collapses in her arms. This moment represents his entire character development: a transformation from a merciless monster driven by hatred into a grieving, broken child who must confront the possibility of a different existence.

Notable abilities include his command over the Phantom Ship and his forces, as well as his personal combat prowess, as he is able to physically beat Hayami in their final confrontation. He also uses a device to communicate with humans, which he ultimately discards in his final moment of rage and rejection. His survival after the destruction of his ship highlights his physical resilience as a hybrid.
