Description
Delphine Eraclea, also known as the Maestro, is the head of the Guild and the principal antagonist of the anime Last Exile. She is the older sister of Dio Eraclea and a member of the Eraclea bloodline, the ruling family of the Guild, an aristocratic organization that controls knowledge and technology across the world of Prester and dominates the rival nations of Anatoray and Disith. She secured her position by eliminating the other Guild houses and taking their Mysteria, the inscribed keys required to access Exile, leaving only the Hamilton house Mysteria outside her control after it was lost to the captain Alex Row at an auction.
Delphine is portrayed as heartless, cruel, and decadent, with a licentious and aristocratic demeanor that masks her impatience and ruthlessness. She enjoys bringing misery to those under her influence and takes pleasure in confusing and misleading her victims. Vain and arrogant, she views herself as a divine and benevolent ruler, yet her behavior reveals a callous disregard for life and a willingness to destroy anyone who inconveniences her. Her favorite flower is the rose, and the comparison suits her: she is graceful, beautiful, and deadly, using charm and feigned interest to disarm people before striking. When Luciola pleaded with her to allow Dio to go free, she appeared to entertain his request, then killed him with a ring-shaped device that disintegrated him on the spot.
Her motivations center on absolute control. She seeks to take command of Exile, which she knows to be the colony ship that carried the first settlers to Prester, and she intends to use the girl Alvis Hamilton together with the Mysteria to unlock it. Although she speaks of desiring stability, her actual goal is to preserve the Guild's supremacy and her own authority by manipulating the conflict between the two nations and crushing all opposition.
In the story, Delphine abducts Alvis and Claus Valca in order to extract the secrets of Exile, and she leads her forces in the final confrontation as the allied fleet gives chase. She does not rely on personal combat ability, preferring to exercise her immense oppressive influence through loyal subordinates such as Cicada and his attack force. Her only personal weapons are the golden rings she wears, which can reduce a person to golden shards or ash, while her true strengths lie in her intellect, her skill at deception, and her psychological manipulation, all of which she wields with precision.
Her key relationship is with her brother Dio, whom she treats with cold indifference despite their kinship, and her past encounter with Alex Row made her the sole target of his personal vengeance; he eventually strangles her to death even while bound by her rose tendrils. She remains a consistent and unrepentant tyrant throughout the series, and her fatal weakness is her tendency to underestimate the resolve of those she regards as beneath her. With her death and Alvis's release of Exile, the power of the Guild is broken, never to be restored.
