Alexander Anderson is a warrior priest and paladin for the Vatican’s secret monster-hunting organization, Section XIII Iscariot. His background is largely unknown, though he runs an orphanage near Vatican City in Italy. He is a very tall, lean man with broad shoulders, short spiky blond hair, a heavy jaw with constant stubble, and a large wedge-shaped scar on his left cheek. He typically wears a grey cassock, round glasses, white gloves, and a silver cross. Anderson is driven by an ardent, almost fanatical devotion to the Catholic faith, compulsively quoting Bible passages and showing intense hatred for Protestants, referring to Integra Hellsing as Babylon. Away from battle, however, he is calm and kind toward the orphans in his care. He possesses a strong moral code and becomes angered when innocent people are killed, regardless of their religion. His primary mission is to destroy all monsters, especially his arch-rival Alucard, whom he views as the ultimate threat. Anderson serves as a formidable antagonist and foil to Alucard, with the two sharing a deep, grudging respect. He raised Enrico Maxwell, Heinkel Wolfe, and Yumie Takagi at his orphanage, acting as their mentor. His character arc culminates when he uses the holy relic known as the Nail of Helena to transform himself into an inhuman being, sacrificing his humanity to match Alucard’s power. Alucard ultimately kills him, and in his dying moments Anderson finds peace. As a regenerator enhanced with healing abilities, he can recover from grievous wounds and has slowed aging. He wields blessed silver bayonets with superhuman accuracy and speed, producing them in limitless numbers, and can create holy barriers or teleport using scripture pages.
