Description
Ayato Kamina is the central protagonist of RahXephon, a young man whose ordinary life is revealed to be an elaborate construct. At the beginning of the story, he is introduced as a 17-year-old high school student and an aspiring artist living in Tokyo, where he believes he is a normal human. He has a quiet and introspective nature, spending much of his time drawing and painting. His artwork most often features a recurring image of a girl on a cliff looking out toward the sea. On his body, he carries birthmark-like symbols resembling runes, which are a physical sign of his destiny as a potential "instrumentalist" for a giant mecha known as the RahXephon.

Ayato's entire identity is shattered when he is forcibly taken from his home by Haruka Shitow and the RahXephon itself. He discovers that the Tokyo he knew is actually a sealed dimension called Tokyo Jupiter, controlled by an enigmatic race known as the Mu. Outside this barrier, twelve years have passed in the real world, while inside he has only aged a short time. This revelation thrusts him into a profound identity crisis. As a being who is part of the Mu—his own mother is revealed to be one of their leaders—but raised as a human, he struggles to find where he belongs and often questions his own self-worth and abilities. Unlike the archetypal reluctant mecha pilot who is paralyzed by self-pity, Ayato generally tries to process the manipulation and trauma he experiences with a rational and level-headed approach. He wants to understand the truth of his situation, but when confronted with shocking revelations, such as seeing his mother bleed blue blood, he reacts with visceral fear and panic.

His primary motivation throughout the series is to uncover the truth about his origins, his mother Maya Kamina, and the nature of the world. As he comes to accept his role as the pilot of the RahXephon, he decides that his reason for fighting is to protect his friends and loved ones, regardless of whether they are human or Mu. This decision is complicated by the tragic nature of his powers; by destroying the giant monsters known as Dolems to protect his new home, he unknowingly kills the Mu controlling them, including his former best friends from Tokyo Jupiter, which causes him immense guilt and makes him question his purpose.

Ayato's relationships are central to his development. His dynamic with Haruka Shitow forms the emotional core of the story. She is the older woman who rescued him and a former love from his forgotten past. As he adapts to life outside Tokyo Jupiter, he lives with Haruka and her younger sister Megumi, slowly rebuilding a connection with her despite the complex age gap caused by the time distortion. His relationship with his mother, Maya, is another critical pillar. She raised him within Tokyo Jupiter but is revealed to be a powerful Mu manipulating his fate, forcing Ayato to confront a deep sense of betrayal. He also shares a mysterious bond with Quon Kisaragi, a strange girl who is revealed to be his genetic provider. Another significant figure is Reika Mishima, the girl from his paintings, who is not a real person but the physical manifestation of the RahXephon's soul, Ixtli, guiding him toward his destiny.

Throughout the series, Ayato develops from a confused and passive student into an active agent who accepts his role in shaping reality. He must come to terms with his identity as an "Ollin," one who can tune the world. His notable ability is his unique connection to the RahXephon, a godlike mecha that is linked to him physically, mentally, and emotionally. He feels the pain of any damage inflicted on the machine. The RahXephon responds to his voice commands and will even move on its own to protect him. As he grows, his control over the RahXephon evolves, allowing him to use offensive abilities such as energy blades, force blasts, and a powerful energy bow. At the conclusion of the story, Ayato succeeds in fully merging with the RahXephon, achieving the power to "re-tune" the world. This act of harmonization resets reality, erasing the dimensional split that created Tokyo Jupiter. In this new world, Ayato lives as an adult, now married to Haruka with an infant daughter named Quon.
