Description
Kazuki Fuuchouin is the last heir of the noble Fuuchouin family and the master of its secret string-based martial art. He is a young man with long hair and a delicate, feminine face, which frequently leads to others mistaking his gender. Despite this gentle appearance, he is a formidable and deeply feared fighter known by the epithets Kazuki of the Strings and the Prince of Fear. His grace and charm are balanced by a cold, terrifying fury when he is truly angered.
The character’s background is marked by tragedy. When he was in his early teens, his family’s house was destroyed and his clan massacred in a mysterious fire, an attack later revealed to have been carried out by an enemy clan known as the Kokuchouin, or Ura. Following this event, he fled with childhood companions to the Infinity Fortress, a vast and lawless area within Tokyo. There, he rose to power as the leader of a gang named Fuuga before becoming one of the Four Kings of VOLTS, serving under the Lightning Emperor, Ginji Amano. After VOLTS disbanded, he left the Infinity Fortress and began working as an information seeker, or annaiya, in the streets of Shinjuku.
Kazuki is deeply loyal and values his friendships, most notably with Ginji Amano. He openly admires Ginji and decided long ago to follow him, a bond that makes him a frequent ally of the GetBackers retrieval service. His relationship with the other GetBacker, Ban Mido, is one of mutual tolerance rather than closeness, with Ban giving him the unflattering nickname thread spool. Kazuki maintains a strong and complex bond with Juubei Kakei, the heir to a clan that has served the Fuuchouins as doctors for generations. They were childhood friends, but their paths diverged when Kazuki left the Infinity Fortress, leading to a tense and eventual reconciliation. He is also close with Shido Fuyuki, another of the Four Kings, with whom he forms a nearly perfect combat combination.
While usually composed, Kazuki has a fierce sense of justice and a very low tolerance for men who abuse women. Making fun of his feminine appearance is a berserk button that incites his immediate and severe wrath. His core motivation is tied to his past; he seeks to uncover the truth behind the destruction of his clan and to confront the Kokuchouin. This search leads to the revelation that the enemy clan was led by his younger brother, Yohan, who was given away at birth due to a feared omen tied to a stigma mark. Over the course of the story, Kazuki evolves from a prideful heir seeking vengeance to someone who accepts the dark history and sins of his own family, ultimately taking on the duty to free his enemies from a curse and redeem his brother.
Kazuki’s abilities are derived from the Fuuchouin school of combat, which emphasizes grace and elegance. He fights using nearly invisible, razor-sharp koto or harp strings, which are strong enough to cut through steel, concrete, and flesh. These strings are stored in two small bells tied to a strand of his hair. By vibrating the strings with his fingertips, he can control their sharpness and strength for various techniques, from forming impenetrable shields to creating offensive forms named after natural phenomena like Misty Rain and Torrent. His most powerful technique, Empty Moon, uses super-fast strings to create a vacuum that slashes the opponent. He also possesses a stigma mark in his left eye, a sign of having spent a week surviving in the deadly Beltline of the Infinity Fortress, a period during which he earned his fearsome Prince of Fear title due to the cruelty he exhibited for survival.
