Description
Haruki Emishi is a character from the anime Getbackers, a young warrior known by the fearsome epithet "The Fresh Blood Joker" or "Bloody Joker," a name earned because he reportedly laughs while his enemies bleed and often ends fights covered in their blood. He is twenty years old, stands 178 centimeters tall, and weighs 70 kilograms, with a birthday on May 16. Emishi hails from the ancient Western Chinese desert kingdom of Loulan, also known as Rouran, and is the last surviving male of his line capable of fighting. His background is deeply tied to the lawless district known as the Infinity Fortress, where he initially served as a follower of a powerful group called Volts.
In terms of personality, Emishi presents a complex mix of traits. The cheerful and sometimes simple-minded demeanor he often shows can belie his deadly reputation in combat. He is known for his loyalty, a strong sense of humor, and a protective attitude towards women, a trait instilled by his upbringing. His primary motivation shifts throughout the story. After the dissolution of Volts, he chooses to align himself with the young genius MakubeX, becoming one of his new "Four Kings" chosen for his incredible speed and fighting prowess. His actions are heavily influenced by personal feelings of abandonment and a need for recognition, particularly after his former comrades like Ginji, Kazuki, and Shido left the Infinity Fortress, leading him to seek confrontation with them.
His most significant relationship is with Shido Fuyuki. Emishi holds a deep admiration for Shido, which stems from an incident where the "Beast Master" ventured into Emishi's village within the Infinity Fortress to deliver food to starving children, an act of kindness that contrasted sharply with the violent rumors surrounding Shido. This friendship is a source of great internal conflict, and when their paths become adversarial, their battles are charged with a mix of rivalry, a desire for acknowledgement, and a sense of betrayal. In the narrative, Emishi serves as a formidable obstacle for the main characters, a former ally turned opponent who must be confronted as the story escalates within the Infinity Fortress. He later works alongside another warrior named Jubei Kakei, and together they face off against the protagonists and their allies.
Development-wise, Emishi is portrayed not as a purely evil antagonist but as a misguided individual whose choices are driven by personal hurt and a change in loyalties after the power structure of his world collapses. While he is often considered to be on par with the most elite fighters, his true potential is rarely seen, as he seldom fights with complete seriousness. His most notable ability is his unique weapon: a double-sided whip called "Dragon's Hair." Woven from the specially treated and braided hair of the women of his tribe, the whip is said to be as strong and flexible as a dragon's whisker. Emishi wields this weapon with great speed and fluidity, employing techniques such as "The Spinning Top," "Venom Imitation," "Sandstorm," and "Winds of Destruction". Beyond his whip skill, he possesses a dangerous innate power. As a warrior of Loulan, his blood is highly combustible when it comes into contact with oxygen, although this ability typically requires a large, arterial spray of blood to be effective.
