Description
Bonta kun originates as the official mascot character of Fumo Fumo Land, an amusement park located near the area where the main characters live. The costume depicts a yellow, two-headed creature of ambiguous species, often described as resembling a mouse or a dog, and it wears a distinctive hat and a red bow tie. When worn by a performer, the character is peaceful, jolly, friendly, and innocent, distributing balloons to children and contributing to the cheerful atmosphere of the park. The character is always heard making the sound "fumofu" or variations of it, a trait that becomes a defining characteristic even when the costume is used for other purposes.
The role of Bonta kun changes dramatically when the protagonist Sousuke Sagara acquires the costume. Faced with a situation where Kaname Chidori is threatened by a group of yakuza during a date at the amusement park, Sousuke dons the abandoned mascot suit to intervene without revealing his own identity. In this context, the costume's internal voice changer transforms Sousuke's voice into the character's signature "fumofu" sounds, regardless of what the wearer actually says. This initial rescue is the catalyst for Bonta kun's transformation from a simple mascot into a unique piece of tactical equipment.
Sousuke's motivation for repeatedly using and improving the Bonta kun costume stems from a combination of practicality and a deeper, personal fondness for the character. The costume provides an effective disguise, as its silhouette is completely different from a human's, and its thick material offers significant protection, enough to block rifle bullets. However, the attachment is also sentimental. A young Sousuke, after surviving a plane crash, was shown holding a Bonta kun doll, and this childhood connection appears to linger, influencing his later decision to modify the costume despite its absurd appearance. He eventually develops the Bonta kun suit into a functional powered exoskeleton, the Bonta Army Mk-2, equipping it with night vision sensors, high-sensitivity microphones, and digital communicators for surveillance and combat. Later, a mass-produced version is developed, incorporating even more advanced features like infrared cameras, heartbeat sensors, and a muscle strength assistance system based on Arm Slave control technology. The only persistent flaw is the voice changer, which cannot be deactivated without crashing the entire system, forcing any wearer to communicate only in variations of "fumo".
The character's key relationships are largely defined by its use as a tool by other individuals. For Sousuke, Bonta kun is a means to an end, allowing him to protect Kaname and conduct operations while hidden, though it also represents a rare, almost childish attachment from his otherwise militaristic personality. For Kaname, the Bonta kun suit is a source of frustration and humor, as she is often forced to act as a translator for Sousuke when he is inside it, relaying his messages over a headset because he can only say "fumo". The suit also has a significant relationship with Teletha Testarossa. It is revealed that Tessa, during a vacation in Japan, tampered with the Bonta kun suit's systems, intentionally creating the voice changer malfunction simply because she wanted to hear Sousuke make "fumofumo" sounds. The mass-produced Bonta kun suits are also acquired by the yakuza gang of Mikihara Kanji, who use them to great effect in a rescue operation, turning local gangsters into an effective counter-terrorism force and creating an unwritten rule among the underworld to beware of Bonta kun.
The development of Bonta kun is extensive. It begins as a simple amusement park mascot costume. Sousuke's modifications turn it into a prototype tactical suit, the Bonta Army Mk-2. This is later refined into a fully functional mass-produced powered suit intended for military and police use. Despite its impressive combat abilities, the mass-produced version fails to find a market due to the embarrassing voice issue, with only the Miami Police Department and the FBI making purchases. The character's abilities in its modified form are notable. The suit grants the wearer enhanced strength, significant bulletproof protection, and advanced sensory equipment for detecting enemies. The wearer is also able to utilize a wide array of conventional weaponry, including handguns, shotguns, assault rifles, grenades, and riot batons. Its unorthodox appearance provides a tactical advantage, as enemy sensors and artificial intelligence systems often fail to recognize the doll-like shape as a threat, unlike a human soldier or standard mecha. Despite these formidable capabilities, the Bonta kun suit remains inextricably linked to its original, innocent mascot identity, creating a unique and enduring juxtaposition of the cute and the militaristic.
