Description
Ikki Tenryou is an elementary school student for whom being a Medafighter, or a Medabot battle competitor, is his greatest ambition. His path to achieving this dream began when he discovered a rare and powerful Kabuto Medal near a river, which allowed him to purchase an outdated KBT-type Medabot model. He placed the medal into this robot, awakening it and naming his new partner Metabee.
Ikki is characterized by a lively, stubborn, and valiant personality, often described as a boy who is both easygoing and a bit timid. His defining trait is his powerful determination to become the world's best Medafighter, a goal that drives him to challenge powerful opponents and prove his skills. While he dreams of greatness, he also has relatable childhood interests, such as trying to impress a girl named Karin.
The core of Ikki's story is his challenging but unbreakable partnership with his Medabot, Metabee. Unlike most Medabots, which are obedient, Metabee is fiercely independent, stubborn, sarcastic, and often refuses to follow Ikki's commands. This lack of obedience initially creates friction, but through numerous Robattles, or robot battles, they forge a powerful bond built on mutual respect and deep loyalty. Their relationship is a central driver of the narrative, with each character influencing the other's growth and learning to cooperate effectively despite their differences.
Throughout his journey, Ikki is supported by key relationships with other characters. His close friend, Arika (known as Erika in some versions), often accompanies him and documents his exploits for the school newspaper with her Medabot, Brass. He also develops a friendly rivalry with a serious and arrogant Medafighter named Kouji. As Ikki's skills grow, he is invited to become the apprentice of a master researcher known as Dr. Medarot. Later in his journey, Ikki encounters a new threat from the Death Medarot Company, which produces ruthless, emotionless robots called Death Medarots or Kilobots that cheat to win. To face these unethical opponents, a mechanic named Nae provides Ikki with an upgraded Medarotch and new parts to transform Metabee into a more powerful model known as Saikachis. During this conflict, he faces antagonists like Ginkai and Kokuryuu Kamizake but ultimately helps redeem them by advocating for the traditional, honorable spirit of Robattling.
Ikki's abilities as a Medafighter are not based on raw power but on his strategic mind and adaptability. His battle style is a mix of improvisation and a firm grasp of his Medabot's capabilities, allowing him to come up with unconventional tactics on the fly. He demonstrates a capacity to develop new combat strategies against different types of foes, such as when he learns to counter emotionless Death Medarots. His true strength, however, lies in his partnership with Metabee, particularly in their ability to unlock the Medaforce. This is a mysterious and devastating power that dwells deep within Metabee's rare Medal, which the pair can unleash in critical battles. Through perseverance, dedication to his friends, and a firm belief in fair competition, Ikki matures from a boy who could not afford a Medabot into a respected and strategic Medafighter.
