Description
Henry is a character defined by a hidden past and a dual identity. By day, he works as an unassuming clerk at a local convenience store, a familiar face to kids like Ikki who frequent the shop. By night, however, he assumes the persona of the Phantom Renegade, a mysterious thief who targets rare Medabot Medals. This secret life stems from his history as a former World Robattle Champion. Years before the main events of the story, Henry and his original Medabot, a KBT-type named Medabee, won the world championship. However, this victory triggered a catastrophic event known as the Ten Days of Darkness, during which the Medabot's rare Medal caused it to go berserk and incite other Medabots to rampage and attack humans. Henry was forced to make the painful decision to destroy his own partner to stop the chaos, an event that took him ten days to steel himself for and left him with deep-seated guilt.
This traumatic experience is the core of Henry's personality and motivations. He is typically calm, knowledgeable, and somewhat mysterious, often speaking in a quiet, measured tone. His actions as the Phantom Renegade are not driven by malice but by a desire to atone for the past and protect others from similar fates. He steals Medals not for personal gain but to keep powerful, unstable Medals out of the wrong hands, often delivering them to trustworthy individuals like Dr. Aki. Furthermore, he aims to mentor the next generation of Medafighters, seeing in the impulsive but kind-hearted Ikki a similar potential he once had. He deliberately sells Ikki an outdated, stubborn Medabot named Metabee, who is revealed to be a repaired version of his original partner, now renamed Arcbeetle. This act allows Henry to observe and guide Ikki from the shadows, hoping to see a better outcome this time.
Henry's role in the story is that of a guardian and a secret benefactor. As the clerk at the convenience store, he offers quiet advice and information to Ikki and his friends. As the Phantom Renegade, he intervenes in dangerous situations, using his immense skills to protect the children and defeat threats they cannot handle alone. His key relationship is with his Medabot, Arcbeetle, a powerful Hercules Beetle-type with a legendary Kabuto Medal. Arcbeetle is the rebuilt form of the original Medabee, though it is implied that the Medabot lost its memories of its past with Henry when its Medal was shattered and repaired. Despite this, their bond is profound, characterized by absolute loyalty and unspoken understanding. Arcbeetle rarely speaks, communicating through actions and a fierce dedication to its master. Henry also has a significant, if distant, relationship with Ikki, viewing him as a successor of sorts. He maintains a respectful understanding with Dr. Aki, working together to guide young Medafighters.
Over the course of the narrative, Henry demonstrates significant development. While he begins as a deeply enigmatic figure whose true allegiance is questioned, his past is gradually revealed, transforming him from a suspected villain into a tragic hero seeking redemption. He learns to trust again, moving from a position of isolated, secret atonement to a more open role as a mentor. His decision to allow Ikki to keep the rogue Metabee, and later to fight openly as the Space Medafighter X in the world tournament, shows his willingness to hope for a future where Medabots and humans live in harmony without repeating the mistakes of the past.
Notable abilities possessed by Henry include expert knowledge of Medabot mechanics and strategy, honed by his years as a champion. His true capability is best expressed through his Medabot, Arcbeetle. Thanks to its rare Medal, Arcbeetle is exceptionally powerful, with superior reflexes and the ability to use the Medaforce, a devastating energy-based attack. Arcbeetle’s signature and most powerful move is The Prominence, a beam of concentrated solar energy fired from the twin horns on its head and chest, an attack Henry claims has the power of the sun and is capable of defeating hundreds of opponents at once. The Medabot is also incredibly fast, agile, and proficient with its Tri-Cannon arm lasers, making it one of the most formidable combat units in the series.
