Description
Phantom Renegade is the masked alter ego of Hikaru Agata, a former world Robattle champion who, in his civilian life, works quietly as a store clerk under the name Henry. Known in the Japanese version as the Phantom Thief Retort, he appears as a mysterious and elusive figure who operates mainly at night, arriving without warning and disappearing just as quickly. His most defining trait is his concealed identity: he wears a mask and a distinctive costume to keep his true face hidden, and maintaining that secrecy is a constant struggle throughout the series.
His background is rooted in tragedy. Eight years before the events of the story, Hikaru Agata was a celebrated champion whose Medabot played a central role in an event called the Ten Days of Darkness, a period in which Medabots across the world went on a destructive rampage. The rampage only ended when Hikaru was forced to destroy his own Medabot's medal. Carrying the weight of that catastrophe, he disappeared from public life and eventually adopted the Phantom Renegade persona at the suggestion of Dr. Aki, working to collect and protect rare medals so that they could never again fall into the wrong hands and cause a similar disaster.
In terms of personality, Phantom Renegade is composed, capable, and guarded, with a strong sense of responsibility beneath his criminal reputation. Although he is publicly regarded as a thief and an outlaw, his actions reveal a vigilante motivated by atonement and protection rather than greed. He functions as a sort of Robin Hood figure, taking rare medals from those who would misuse them and intervening in dangerous situations that ordinary fighters cannot handle. He is especially attentive to young and promising Medabot fighters, choosing to support them from the shadows rather than seek recognition.
His role in the story begins with a pivotal accident: while fleeing after a theft, he accidentally drops a rare Kabuto Medal, which is later found by the protagonist Ikki Tenryou and becomes the heart of his partner Medabot Metabee. From that point, Phantom Renegade repeatedly crosses paths with Ikki and his friends, aiding them against the Rubberobo Gang and its schemes. He saves Ikki's life on more than one occasion and acts as a hidden mentor figure, guiding the younger fighter without ever revealing who he truly is. His most notable episode of exposure comes when a tabloid journalist, Max Macraker, pursues him after a daring robbery at the Medabot Museum and manages to knock his mask off, creating a moment of genuine peril for his secret. In the anime, the other characters never discover that Henry and Phantom Renegade are the same person.
His key relationships are defined by secrecy and influence. With Dr. Aki, he shares a partnership built on a common mission to protect rare medals. With Ikki, he is a benefactor and protector who shapes the younger hero's path from the very beginning. He also maintains another secret identity as Space Medafighter X, the top-ranked Medafighter in Japan, a persona that is visually similar to Phantom Renegade but distinguished by a golden mask. Over the course of the series, the strain of juggling these multiple identities becomes a recurring challenge, and at times other characters temporarily step in to maintain the facade.
His development is characterized by a gradual shift from feared outlaw to understood protector. Early on, he is viewed as a criminal and a mystery, but as his interventions in the conflict become more frequent, his true nature as a guardian becomes clear. His past as the champion who lived through the Ten Days of Darkness explains his unwavering drive: he is not merely stealing medals but trying to prevent history from repeating itself.
As a fighter, Phantom Renegade is highly skilled, both as a tactician and in direct Robattle combat. His partner is an Arcbeetle, a powerful beetle-type Medabot equipped with a legendary Kabuto Medal, and together they are more than a match for most opponents. Beyond his Robattling ability, he excels at stealth, infiltration, and escape, using these talents to slip past guards, evade pursuers, and operate far beyond the reach of authorities. His combination of combat prowess, strategic thinking, and near-mythical elusiveness makes him one of the most formidable and memorable presences in the series.
