Description
The character known as Space Medarotter X, or Space Medafighter X in the Western adaptation, is a prominent alter ego in the Medabots anime, primarily adopted by the skilled Medafighter Hikaru Agata. This persona is introduced as the top-ranked Medafighter in Japan, a mysterious and powerful figure whose true identity is initially concealed by a striking costume that includes a golden mask and a flowing scarf. Beneath this heroic guise, Space Medarotter X is revealed to be the same individual as the phantom thief known as Phantom Retort, who is himself Hikaru Agata, a former finalist in the World Robottle Cup.

The background of Hikaru Agata is central to understanding the motivations of Space Medarotter X. Years before the events of the series, Hikaru was a promising Medafighter whose partner was a Metabee, a Metal Beetle-type Medabot. During a past World Robottle Tournament, a catastrophic event known as the Ten Days of Darkness caused Medabots worldwide to go berserk. To prevent a global disaster, Hikaru was forced to destroy his own Metabee's medal, an act that left deep emotional scars and a sense of responsibility. This tragic past fuels his actions, as he adopts the Phantom Retort identity to steal rare medals and prevent another such calamity, while the Space Medarotter X persona allows him to continue fighting as a top-tier competitor without being arrested for his phantom thief activities.

Personality-wise, Space Medarotter X embodies the qualities of a classic, mysterious hero. He is highly skilled, acrobatic, and possesses remarkable physical resistance. His demeanor is often serious and dramatic, as seen in his flamboyant introductory catchphrase where he declares himself a shooting star from across the galaxy. Despite his heroic flair, he is also strict and acts as a mentor, particularly towards the protagonist, Ikki Tenryou. He harshly criticizes Ikki for staking his Medabot's medal in a battle, teaching him that only Medaparts should be wagered, and constantly pushes Ikki to grow stronger. His true identity as the kind and somewhat unassuming convenience store clerk, Henry, contrasts sharply with the confident and commanding presence of his masked personas.

In the story, Space Medarotter X serves as a powerful ally and a benchmark for other Medafighters. He fights alongside his immensely strong partner, Arcbeetle, a KBT-type Medabot modeled after a Hercules beetle. Arcbeetle is proficient in both long and short-range combat, with signature attacks including the Tri-Cannon, which fires fireballs from its arm units, and its devastating finishing move, the Prominence, a powerful beam attack that requires a charging sequence. During a critical battle, Space Medarotter X reveals his identity as Phantom Retort by taking an attack meant for Ikki, shattering his mask in the process. Later, he confronts the massive God Emperor, managing to stop it but seemingly sacrificing himself in a cliff collapse, only to reappear alive to continue the fight.

Key relationships define his role throughout the series. His bond with his Medabot, Arcbeetle, is one of absolute trust and shared heroism, with Arcbeetle loyally following him into any danger. His relationship with Ikki Tenryou is complex; as Space Medarotter X, he is a rival and a stern mentor, but as Henry, he is the seller who provided Ikki with his own Metabee, which was originally Hikaru's partner. This creates a deep, indirect connection, as Hikaru sees in Ikki and the new Metabee a second chance to right the wrongs of his past. Other key relationships include his collaboration with Dr. Akihabara in his quest to protect rare medals.

Space Medarotter X undergoes significant development, particularly concerning his identity and legacy. After his identity as Phantom Retort is exposed, he cannot fight openly as himself and must recruit substitutes—including Karin, Miss Caviar, and even the reluctant Iwanoi—to compete under the Space Medarotter X name during the World Robottle Cup. This makes him an unpredictable opponent, as he uses a different Medabot for nearly every match. The only time he fights in person is against Team USA, where he is publicly unmasked as Hikaru Agata and forced to flee from the police, leaving his golden mask behind and retiring the persona. In the end, he sheds the title to appear again as the Phantom Retort, finally revealing the truth about the Ten Days of Darkness and achieving a form of closure by confronting his past.

In terms of notable abilities, Hikaru Agata is a supremely gifted Medafighter. His strategic mind is his greatest weapon, making him a highly unpredictable opponent. Beyond his tactical skill, his physical abilities are extraordinary; even without his Medabot, he displays high physical resistance, agility, and acrobatic prowess, possibly enhanced by his suit. However, his true power is showcased through his partnership with Arcbeetle, a Medabot of immense strength that he commands with perfect synergy to execute powerful and decisive attacks.
