Description
Hiromi Kawanami, also known as Potamos, is a significant character introduced in the latter part of the original Wedding Peach anime and continues to appear in Wedding Peach DX. Her name carries a thematic meaning, as Potamos is derived from the Greek word for river, and her chosen human surname, Kawanami, incorporates characters that also relate to water and waves, reflecting her origins as a water demon. She has light purple hair and red eyes, and her speech is often marked by a distinctive verbal tic, frequently adding a phrase akin to "you know" or "mitai na" at the end of her sentences.

In her original incarnation, Potamos is a devil from the Aqua tribe, sent by the evil Queen Raindevila to the human world to serve as a lieutenant. Her initial role is to assist and observe the devil Igneous, for whom she harbors a strong affection. However, when Igneous begins to show signs of being softened by human emotions after befriending a human boy, Potamos follows Raindevila's directive and eliminates him, an act she later comes to regret. After this, she adopts the human disguise of a schoolgirl named Hiromi Kawanami and transfers to the same academy as the love angels. Her mission evolves into identifying the love angels and locating the sacred Saint Something Four items, but she quickly becomes distracted by her infatuation with Yousuke Fuuma, the human boy whom the lead angel Wedding Peach loves.

Potamos is characterized by a volatile and dramatic personality. She is moody, egotistical, jealous, and prone to fits of childish fury, yet she is also capable of being charming, cheerful, and impish when it serves her purpose. Her motivations are primarily selfish and driven by desire. As a devil, she has been indoctrinated to hate love, believing it must be destroyed, but she finds herself unable to comprehend the powerful feelings she develops for Yousuke. Her primary goal shifts from serving Raindevila to possessing Yousuke for herself, and she views the love angel Momoko Hanasaki, Yousuke's true love, as her greatest rival. Her jealousy and frustration over Yousuke's rejection often cause her to drop her human persona and attack indiscriminately.

Throughout the original story, Potamos undergoes a significant transformation. Her obsessive love for Yousuke eventually leads to her downfall as a devil. In a climactic battle, she attempts to take Yousuke back to the demon world to marry him, but her power spirals out of control, and she is nearly killed by Raindevila's assassins for her betrayal. She is ultimately saved and purified by the love angels, which strips her of her demonic nature and transforms her into a genuine human being. In her final moments as a devil, she comes to understand the true meaning of love and the feelings that Igneous had discovered before his death, experiencing remorse for her past actions. As a purified human, she apologizes to Yousuke for her cruel behavior and departs to start a new life.

In Wedding Peach DX, Hiromi returns in a supporting role. Now living as a human, she has transferred to a different school but reappears during a special episode. Her personality remains as bossy and impish as ever, much to the annoyance of the love angels. In this appearance, she serves as a catalyst for the plot, having inadvertently come into possession of a magical artifact, the mask of the Golden Mask, causing trouble for the main characters. Her role is less antagonistic and more of a mischievous and talkative acquaintance who, while aware of the angels' secret identities, is no longer a direct threat.

As a water demon, Potamos possesses considerable power, including teleportation, shapeshifting, and control over water and ice. She is capable of creating powerful vortexes and summoning lesser devils to do her bidding. In the original series, her abilities make her a formidable foe for the love angels. In the Wedding Peach DX bonus video, she gains the ability to transform into the fifth love angel, known as Angel Potamos. In this form, which features a black and green ensemble, she lacks a dedicated weapon. Her primary attack is the Potamos Punch, where she launches a booster from her arm to strike an opponent. She can also participate in the combined special attack, the Saint Honeymoon Attack, using a borrowed weapon. Her relationships in DX are mostly defined by her past, as she holds no lasting ill will toward the love angels and exists as a neutral figure who sometimes creates chaos for her own amusement.
