TV-Series
Description
Kyoujyu, also known as the Chief, is a central character from the original Beyblade anime series. His real name is Manabu Saien, but he is almost exclusively called by his nickname, which reflects his role as the resident expert on all matters related to beyblading. In terms of appearance, Kyoujyu is the smallest and youngest member of his primary team. He has messy light brown hair that often covers his eyes, with a pair of blue glasses typically propped up on his head. Distinctive lightning-shaped marks are present on both of his cheeks. His usual outfit consists of a simple white t-shirt, a green tie, and brown khaki pants.
Kyoujyu is best defined as the brains of the Bladebreakers team. He is a self-described nerd whose passion for beyblading is not centered on competition but on the scientific and mechanical principles behind the tops themselves. He possesses a genius-level intellect, particularly in computer technology and engineering, and is driven by an insatiable curiosity to study beyblade parts, analyze battle statistics, and find ways to improve performance. His dedication is such that he would gladly take a job as a janitor simply to be near high-grade instruments and computers. While he can be shy and is not naturally aggressive, he is deeply kind, caring, and possesses a quiet inner strength. He is notably observant and thoughtful, often acting as a mediator or offering quiet support to his more hot-headed friends.
Kyoujyu's primary role in the story is as the team's technician, mechanic, and strategist. He is the vital support member who keeps the team functioning, performing repairs, designing upgrades, and providing crucial data analysis during battles. His main motivation is not personal glory but the intellectual challenge of understanding beyblades and ensuring his friends have the best possible equipment to succeed. This is exemplified by his creation of the Hard Metal Beyblades, a significant technological advancement he developed with help from Miguel and Emily. Although he does not possess a Bit-Beast of his own, a digital entity named Dizzy resides within his laptop and assists him with data analysis.
Kyoujyu’s most significant relationship is with Tyson Granger, the team's protagonist. He meets Tyson early on and immediately becomes his first real friend and ally, providing the strategic advice needed to win an important early battle. This partnership forms the core of the Bladebreakers. He also forms strong bonds with other team members like Max Tate, though he initially feels a twinge of jealousy, fearing Tyson might replace him with a new friend. His relationship with the lone wolf Kai Hiwatari is built on quiet, implicit trust. Despite their limited direct conversation, Kyoujyu's meticulous maintenance of Kai's beyblade and Kai's unquestioning use of it demonstrates a profound mutual respect and understanding.
Over the course of the series, Kyoujyu undergoes a notable character development. In the first two seasons, he almost exclusively remains in a support role, only battling a few times and rarely with great success. His own beyblade, often called Hopper or Einstein, reflects his analytical nature; it features a unique gimmick with a spring-loaded base that allows it to jump and evade attacks rather than directly engaging opponents head-on. However, in the third season, G-Revolution, Kyoujyu begins to emerge as a blader in his own right. When several core members leave the team, he steps up to become an official competing member. He proves to have grown significantly, holding his own against powerful opponents like Tala and showing that his years of study have translated into respectable battling ability.
Kyoujyu’s notable abilities are almost entirely intellectual. He is a prodigy in beyblade mechanics, capable of repairing and modifying tops to their maximum potential. He writes his own software and continuously improves his analytical tools, allowing him to accurately predict opponent strategies and weaknesses. His academic excellence, particularly in mathematics and science, underpins his technical skill. As a blader, his style is not based on power but on evasion and analysis, using his beyblade's jumping ability to gather data before passing on the winning strategy to a stronger teammate. This combination of genius-level intelligence, unwavering loyalty, and personal growth makes him an indispensable figure whose contributions are as crucial to victory as any powerful bit-beast.
