Description
Genma, often referred to as Gema, is a character from the Di Gi Charat franchise. He is formally named Geman Gemaningballs and serves as the guardian to the protagonists Dejiko and Puchiko. He hails from the same planet as the two cat-eared girls, the planet Di Gi Charat.
In appearance, Genma is a unique and simple creature. He is a floating, round yellow ball with a small face that is upside-down, a feature he considers to be normal for his kind. He possesses very short, thin arms with circular hands. Despite his unusual and somewhat abstract design, he is a fully sentient and mobile character who is always seen hovering in the air.
Genma's personality is defined by a serious sense of diligence and duty. He takes his responsibility as the caretaker of Dejiko seriously and is frequently seen trying to correct her lazy, selfish, or unruly behavior through constant lecturing and nagging. However, his guidance is often ineffective and he is almost always the victim of Dejiko's violent outbursts. When he scolds her, she retaliates by using her signature eye beam attack or by physically abusing him. This dynamic establishes Genma as a long-suffering and put-upon figure who serves as a primary source of comic relief. Despite the frequent abuse he endures, he remains a loyal companion and genuinely cares about Dejiko and Puchiko. His character is a subversion of the typical mentor figure, being more of a failed mentor who is bullied by his charge instead of being a wise and respected guide.
Within the story, Genma functions as a non-human sidekick and guardian. He is often present as a witness to the absurd events and conflicts that arise, especially those involving Dejiko. His role is largely reactive, often trying to mediate or calm Dejiko down, which invariably fails. He is the straight man to Dejiko's chaotic and impulsive nature. His most defining characteristic is his distinct manner of speaking; he ends all of his sentences with the verbal tic gema or gema gema, which is a consistent trait across nearly all of his appearances.
Regarding key relationships, Genma's most significant and defining connection is with Dejiko. This relationship is primarily one of mutual frustration, with Genma trying to enforce order and Dejiko lashing out at him as a way to release her stress. He also acts as a guardian to Puchiko, though his relationship with her is less antagonistic, as she is generally quieter and more withdrawn. He is also associated with the Black Gema Gema Gang, a group of antagonists who are led by Piyoko, though his interactions with them vary by series.
Genma's role and characterization have seen minor but notable developments across different iterations of the franchise. In the original Di Gi Charat series and its reboot, Di Gi Charat Nyo!, he is the classic victim of Dejiko's abuse as she adjusts to life on Earth. In the prequel series, Panyo Panyo Di Gi Charat, his relationship with Dejiko is depicted as much more affable. In this earlier time period, he is a cooperative participant in group activities and rarely suffers abuse from her, with his talkative nature being her main point of mild annoyance. This version of Genma is also shown with a romantic subplot, as he develops a crush on an idol named Airi. In other media, such as the visual novel Di Gi Charat Fantasy, he continues to uphold his guardian duties to an amnesiac Dejiko in a fantasy setting. However, he does not appear at all in the alternate-future spin-off Winter Garden.
Genma possesses a few notable abilities. While he is often defenseless against Dejiko, he carries a blowgun with tranquilizer darts, though their effectiveness is minimal. He also has the unusual physical property of expanding when he absorbs water and then returning to his original shape after going to the bathroom. According to him, the inside of his body is made of bean paste.
