Description
Queen Merla is a character from the anime Voltron: Defender of the Universe. She is introduced during the second season as a powerful and mysterious figure known as the Queen of Darkness. Her exact origins are unclear; even the witch Haggar admits that no one knows where she came from. She is presented as a distant cousin of Prince Lotor, though her precise relation to Emperor Zarkon is never specified. Before arriving on Planet Doom, Merla had already built her own formidable empire, whose capital planet forbids men from setting foot on it, and she had captured a legendary group of psychic women called the Muses of Norn.

Merla possesses strong telepathic abilities. She can plant suggestions in the minds of others and compel them to act on those suggestions, though her control is limited and can be resisted, as Lotor proves on one occasion. She is also able to communicate telepathically, spy on people's dreams, and operates a device called the Cosmotron, which sends victims to a dimension named Eventi where they experience pure agony. Her constant companion is a pet vulture.

Her personality is sophisticated and snooty, but also petty and deeply power-hungry. She is confident and fearless, viewing most others as either pawns or obstacles. Upon arriving on Planet Doom, she quickly alienates Lotor, Haggar, and Commander Cossack by belittling them. She takes Haggar’s robeast, mocks her magic as old-fashioned, and uses her mind control to manipulate Zarkon, who is attracted to her, and to humiliate Lotor in front of the court. She has no real loyalty to the Doom court; her alliance with Zarkon and her arranged engagement to Lotor are purely means to an end. Her ultimate goal is to defeat Voltron herself and then dispose of Zarkon to seize his empire for her own.

Merla serves as a rival and foil to Princess Allura. She specifically targets Allura in many of her schemes, attempting to poison her, torture her with the Cosmotron, and repeatedly trying to kill her because she wants to rule the planet Arus. Despite this enmity, Merla expresses a certain fondness for Allura, commenting that she is fun to play with and that it is a shame she is not evil.

Merla’s role in the story begins with her arrival as a new ally for Zarkon, but she soon becomes a major antagonist. She is initially engaged to Lotor to unite their empires, but the marriage is brief and unhappy; Lotor only goes through with it because Zarkon commands him, and Merla regards him as a dimwitted brute. When Lotor ruins her plot to poison Allura and boasts about it, she divorces him in fury.

Later, Merla undergoes a notable development. She begins to develop genuine feelings for Lotor, which softens her ruthless demeanor. Her telepathic powers even falter temporarily, possibly because of the emotional confusion she feels. When tensions between Lotor and Zarkon reach a crisis point and Zarkon orders Lotor’s execution, Merla risks her own life and convinces the Voltron Force to help her rescue Lotor. She attempts to redeem him and turn him away from evil, but Lotor ultimately betrays her, using her affections as a pawn in another attack on Voltron. That plan fails, and Merla leaves with the Voltron Force, calling Lotor a fool and telling him he is just like his father.

Overall, Merla is a self-serving conqueror who evolves from a cold manipulator into a character capable of vulnerability and loyalty, though her arc ends with her being disappointed by Lotor’s inability to change. She is defined by her telepathic powers, her ambition, her rivalry with Allura, and her complicated, ultimately tragic relationship with Lotor.
