Description
Princess Allura is the royal heir of Planet Arus and a central figure in the fight against the Galra Empire. As the daughter of the slain King Alfor, she is the last surviving member of her planet's royal family. Following the death of her father during Zarkon's initial attack, Allura, alongside her royal advisor Coran, largely inhabited the Castle of Lions as they worked to rebuild their world. Her primary role in the story evolves when a new team of explorers arrives on Arus. After an injury to the original pilot Sven, Allura takes on the crucial responsibility of piloting the Blue Lion, becoming an official and essential member of the Voltron Force.
In terms of personality, Allura is characterized by a strong sense of duty and a righteous determination to liberate the universe from tyranny. She possesses a stubborn and principled nature, using her authority and diplomatic skills to navigate both battlefield challenges and political negotiations. Having witnessed the atrocities committed by the Drule Empire firsthand as her home was frequently targeted, she developed resilience and a deep commitment to peace. While she values kindness and often shows compassion even to former enemies, this outlook can sometimes cause others to perceive her as naive. Nevertheless, she is far from passive; she is a proactive leader who is unafraid to stand up to powerful figures like the Skymarshal to protect her people. Allura wears her heart on her sleeve, displaying a passionate commitment to her causes and a willingness to sacrifice her own desires for the greater good.
Her motivations are deeply rooted in the restoration of her planet and the protection of the innocent. Having witnessed the death of her father and the subjugation of her world, she is driven to prevent such suffering from befalling others. She seeks to rebuild Arus and guide it toward a prosperous future, while also arguing for the reinstatement of the Voltron Lions as a necessary defense force against ongoing threats. This dual commitment to her royal duties and her role as a warrior defines much of her internal conflict.
In the story, Allura serves as both the heart of the Voltron Force and the sovereign leader of Arus. She pilots the Blue Lion in battle, bringing essential skills to the formation of Voltron. Beyond combat, she functions as a mentor and leader, particularly to her niece Larmina, whom she raises and trains to eventually take on royal responsibilities. Allura frequently seeks guidance from the spirit of her late father, King Alfor, showing that she carries the weight of her lineage with her. Her arc often involves balancing her conflicting duties as queen and as a pilot, a tension that eventually leads her to make significant decisions about her future and the future of the Voltron lions.
Her key relationships are central to the narrative. She shares a close bond with her advisor, Coran, who helps her navigate her responsibilities. A significant romantic relationship develops with Keith, the pilot of the Black Lion. Their connection deepens over time, culminating in Allura proposing marriage to him, making him her king-consort as she steps into her role as Queen of Arus. She also has a fraught dynamic with Prince Lotor, the son of Emperor Zarkon, who harbors an obsessive and persistent romantic interest in her, making him a recurring threat not just to her safety but to her autonomy. Allura also has a unique and affectionate relationship with a group of highly intelligent, talking space mice who reside in the castle and often assist her. Her family includes her niece Larmina, who eventually takes over as the Blue Lion pilot, as well as cousins Romelle and Bandor.
Throughout her development, Allura transforms from a determined princess fighting to reclaim her world into a decisive and respected queen. Initially focused on immediate combat and survival, she matures into a leader who must make difficult political and personal choices. A major turning point occurs when she ultimately decides to step down as the pilot of the Blue Lion to fully dedicate herself to her duties as the ruling Queen of Arus, passing her lion key to her niece Larmina. This decision reflects her acceptance of her destiny and her ability to prioritize the long-term stability of her planet over her personal desire to be on the front lines of battle.
Regarding her notable abilities, Allura is a highly skilled pilot, capable of handling the complex Blue Lion in high-stakes combat situations. She is also a proficient hand-to-hand combatant, trained in the use of weapons such as whips and bow and arrows. Her resourcefulness and tenacity often allow her to hold her own against more physically imposing foes. While not possessing overt superhuman powers, she exhibits a strong force of will and a natural aptitude for leadership and diplomacy, using her authority and strategic thinking to turn the tide of battles and drive the recovery of her planet. Additionally, she has the unique ability to understand and communicate with her pet space mice, who often serve as her scouts and companions.
