Description
Général Yurak is a major antagonist in Voltron: Defender of the Universe, serving as a high-ranking commander in King Zarkon's forces from Planet Doom. He is initially presented as Zarkon's most trusted and effective military leader, having carried out the emperor's invasions for decades, including the massive bombing of the peaceful planet Arus. His appearance is distinctive and imposing, featuring a yellow left eye, a cybernetic right eye, and a mechanical right arm, which serve as evidence of a long and dangerous military career. He also possesses cat-like ears and mauve hair and typically wears red armor with a matching cape. As a native of Planet Doom, he shares the physiological traits of its inhabitants, including blue skin.
In terms of personality, Yurak is defined by his arrogance and confidence in his own abilities, a trait that comes from his long record of success as Zarkon's best commander. He believes he can handle any situation easily and seeks the glory of defeating the super-robot Voltron, hoping to be known as its conqueror and rewarded with supreme command of Doom's forces. However, his repeated failures against the Voltron Force gradually shatter his pride. As he loses Zarkon's favor, he becomes desperate, eventually begging for mercy from the king and the nobles of Doom when faced with banishment for his incompetence.
Yurak's primary motivation is his desire for glory and his faithful service to King Zarkon, whom he has served loyally for his entire career. This devotion, coupled with his personal ambition, drives him to accept a final, desperate chance at redemption: being transformed into a giant Robeast by the witch Haggar to fight Voltron one last time. This transformation into a titanic version of himself grants him numerous built-in weapons, including blasters on his fingertips, rockets fired from his arms, and chains that can shoot from his abdomen to latch onto targets. Unlike some other characters transformed into Robeasts, Yurak largely retains his original personality and intelligence.
Within the story, Yurak leads numerous raids against Arus, often in coordination with Haggar and her created Robeasts. His role as the primary field commander for the Doom Empire makes him a constant threat. His key relationships are primarily with the Doom hierarchy. He is subordinate to King Zarkon, whose approval he craves, and works alongside Haggar, who ultimately highlights his failures. After his defeats become too numerous, Crown Prince Lotor intervenes to save Yurak from banishment, requesting that he be given the chance to become a Robeast. This leads to his final mission, where Lotor distracts the Voltron paladin Keith while Yurak attacks the other four lions. Yurak manages to disable four of the lions, demonstrating his formidable power. However, Keith returns in the Black Lion, allowing the team to form Voltron, who then destroys the Robeast Yurak. His death is notable as one of the few on-screen character deaths that was retained in the American version of the series. Following his demise, Prince Lotor officially takes his place as the commander of the Doom forces.
