Description
Prince Avok, also written as Prinz Avok, is an antagonist in Voltron: Defender of the Universe. He is the eldest son of King Cova, the ruler of the planet Pollux, and a member of that planet's royal family. Pollux carries a long-standing grievance against the planet Arus, since its people are said to be descendants of an Arusian prince who was banished for his immorality. This historical feud shapes Avok's heritage and his place in the conflict.
Avok's defining motivation is his desire to restore his planet's former glory. When King Cova forms an alliance with Emperor Zarkon against Arus, Avok volunteers to be transformed into a Robeast, one of the giant monsters created by Zarkon's forces, in the hopes of defeating Voltron and personally conquering the world he would one day inherit. His willingness to give up his human form shows a strong sense of ambition, pride in his family line, and devotion to Pollux's cause, though it also places him in direct opposition to the defenders of Arus.
In the episode in which he appears, Avok becomes a key weapon in the alliance's attack. His transformation into a Robeast is meant to give him the power to challenge Voltron directly. The partnership between Zarkon and King Cova is uneasy, with both sides planning to betray one another, and the situation is further complicated when Prince Lotor takes an interest in Avok's sister, Princess Romelle, because she closely resembles Princess Allura. Avok's role as an antagonist ends when he is defeated by the Voltron Force, and he is last seen swimming out to sea.
Within his family, Avok is connected to King Cova as his father, to Princess Romelle as his sister, and to Prince Bandor as his brother. Toward the Voltron Force and Princess Allura, he is an enemy. His notable ability is tied to his altered state as a Robeast, which grants him the size, strength, and combat power of one of Zarkon's monsters. His story is contained within a single episode, and his development centers on the choice to sacrifice his own body for the sake of ambition and family honor, a path that ultimately fails against Voltron.
