TV-Series
Description
Miyu Yamano is the central protagonist of the anime series, a being who appears to be a young girl of around thirteen or fifteen years old but is in fact a vampire who has lived for many decades. Her origins vary somewhat between the original video animation and the television series, but she is consistently portrayed as the daughter of a human and a Shinma, the latter being a race of godlike demons. Because of her mixed heritage, Miyu is a daywalker, unharmed by sunlight, holy water, crucifixes, and she can cast a reflection. She must drink blood to survive, but she chooses her victims with care.

Miyu's background is one of loss and duty. In the OVA, she was born in post-war Japan to a human father and a vampire mother. When she was thirteen, a demon named Larva was sent to kill her, but upon encountering him, Miyu awakened her own vampiric thirst. She drank Larva's blood, sealing his face and voice as punishment and binding him to her as a servant. She learned that her family belonged to the Shinma clan, who were left on Earth to guard the beings sleeping in the darkness, and that many Shinma had escaped during the transition of the guardian role from her mother to her. In the television series, Miyu is the child of a human mother and a Shinma father who was the previous Guardian. Her father was killed by an assassin, but not before placing a protective barrier around her. After a ceremony to awaken her powers, the protectors were slain, and Miyu herself destroyed her mother's killer, becoming the new Guardian.

As the Guardian, also called the Watcher, Miyu's primary role is to hunt down and return stray Shinma to the darkness, protecting humans from their predatory nature. This duty defines her existence. Her aging was halted, leaving her ageless, and she exists in a state of profound loneliness, living in the world of humans but forever separate from them. Her personality is complex and adaptively shaped by her eternal duty. In the OVA, she is often depicted as somewhat childish and can be eerily playful with human lives, while in the television series she is more matured, melancholic, and burdened by the weight of her responsibilities. She is amoral in her actions, driven not by a clear sense of good and evil but by the imperative of her role. She hunts both Shinma and humans to feed, but she does so with a measured, often sad demeanor, aware of the toll her existence takes on herself and others.

Miyu's motivations are rooted in her desire to complete her task and return to the darkness, as well as to discover the truth about her own nature, which has been kept from her since her awakening. Before she turns fifteen, she wishes to be free of her duty, but only after she has banished all the Shinma from Earth and learned who she truly is. Key relationships anchor her story. Larva, the Western Shinma she subjugated, is her constant companion and servant. Despite the forced nature of their bond, a deep and complex dependency and respect grows between them. He is her shadow, bound to her but also the only being who can truly understand her isolated existence. Other notable figures include Reiha, a fellow Guardian-like figure, and Himiko Se, a spiritualist who investigates her and becomes entangled in Miyu's world.

Miyu possesses several notable abilities beyond her vampiric durability and need for blood. She can teleport, levitate, and open dimensional portals. Her primary offensive power is the ability to call forth fire, which she uses to burn Shinma and send them back to the darkness. She is also a flutist, and in some interpretations her music plays a role in her methods. Throughout her story, Miyu shows little personal development in the traditional sense, as she is frozen in time and bound to an eternal cycle. However, her encounters with humans and Shinma often force her to reflect on her own nature and the loneliness of her existence, revealing a deep well of emotion beneath her placid, ageless exterior. She is a tragic figure, a princess of vampires who is both the hunter and the hunted, endlessly walking the line between two worlds.
