Description
Maximilien Robespierre is a character in The Rose of Versailles based on the historical French lawyer and politician who became one of the most influential figures of the French Revolution. In the anime, he is introduced in his youth delivering the congratulatory speech for the School of Louis-le-Grand on the day of Louis XVI’s coronation. He is depicted as a principled and passionate advocate for revolutionary ideals, driven by a vision of justice and equality for the common people. As the story progresses and the revolutionary fervor intensifies, his personality becomes increasingly radical and uncompromising. He is shown as willing to disregard the means to achieve his goals, a radicalization that foreshadows the later Reign of Terror.
Robespierre’s role in the story is as a key historical figure representing the ideological core of the revolution. He interacts with other revolutionary figures, most notably Louis Antoine de Saint-Just, and stands in opposition to the monarchy and nobility, including Marie Antoinette and the court of Versailles. His motivations stem from a deep conviction that the old order must be dismantled and that the people’s will must be enforced, even through harsh measures.
Over the course of the narrative, Robespierre undergoes a notable development from an idealistic young orator into a corrupted politician. At the end of the anime, he and Saint-Just succeed in the revolution, but Robespierre himself becomes guilty of the same authoritarian excesses he once fought against. He ultimately meets the same fate he decreed for others: he is sentenced to death by the guillotine. His abilities lie chiefly in his powerful oratory, legal knowledge, and unwavering determination, which make him a formidable force in the revolutionary assembly. His relationships are primarily ideological and adversarial; his connection to Saint-Just is one of shared purpose, while his stance toward the monarchy and its defenders is one of implacable opposition.
